After studying history at university, Sally moved to London to work in advertising. However, in her spare time she studied floristry at night school and eventually opened her own flower shop. Mystery, Titanic a glorious read scented by flowers
A Five Star delight. The writtingby Sallly Page in The Secret of Flowers brings the unseen behind the scenes world onboard the Titanic to life. It certainly left me in awe of the powerful storytelling. This is a gorgeous read, comforting, and intriguing. The Secret of the Flowers lingers long after the last page is read. ‘Delicacy’ - this is what I felt whilst reading The Secrets of Flowers and this is what I will take away from this book. Sally Page beautifully portrays this delicacy in so many ways throughout the story - the delicate nature of Emma’s grief; the way in which Emma’s new friendships blossom; Tamas’ grief; Violet’s recovery from illness; the splendour of the Titanic; the journey that Emma finds herself on, both forging her own path and growing in self-confidence, and also researching the Florist on board the Titanic; and of course the flowers themselves with the power and healing they bring.

Emma’s story is wonderfully entwined with historic elements and her journey leads her to find peace and acceptance of things that occurred previously. The Secrets of Flowers is a creatively written reminder that ‘life is beautiful.’

I cannot end this review without mentioning Les and Betty. They are the most endearing, encouraging and heartwarming couple. Everyone needs friends like Les and Betty, and I’d most certainly love to join them for coffee and cake in The Flower Cabin!

Although this was slow going , and the word Titanic was mentioned 178 times... i liked this story.
Emma had been through so much hurt and pain , losing her confidence and herself, which was written with emotion and feeling. I loved how her confidence grew and there was good character development.
Betty and Les were wonderful, patient, and kind, they were such a great support for Emma.
Emma's mother was vile , but I would have liked to have known why she was so disapproving of Emma, considering she was a scientist !
The historical aspects were interesting, especially because Violet is a real life figure.
I like how everything was tied together with flowers.
I think, though, it could have been shorter and less descriptive in places and became a little repetitive .
There are trigger warnings of loss, grief, family disfunction, adultery and infertility.

I do love a Sally Paige Novel. This one took a little longer the other two novels to hook me. Telling two stories in alternate chapters, we learn about the story of Emma as she starts working at the local garden centre, and Violet, a stewardess on The Titanic. I do love anything to do with The Titanic so it was really interesting to take this particular view of the ship!

    Love this quote

“He tells her that an ocean is only a number of drops of water, like the raindrops that drip down the portholes some mornings. Without these drops, there is no ocean.“

After the sudden death of her husband, Emma has abandoned her old life as a research scientist at a university and has taken a part-time job as a florist in a privately owned Garden Centre. She has always felt at peace among flowers, and she hopes that this will reset her life. The Garden Centre owners, Les and Betty are good company and Emma enjoys pleasant chats with Les, littered with proverbs and sayings, which amuse them both. Betty is more abrupt but as time goes on, she proves herself to be a valued friend in Emma’s new life.

Emma’s story is interwoven with the tale of Violet Jessop, a stewardess on the Titanic. Emma feels drawn to Violet as she researches the florist who arranged the flowers on the Titanic. Violet works hard to support her mother and younger siblings but she enjoys the life on board. Researching her experiences helps Emma to deal with the grief and anger she feels.

Each chapter has a flower subtitle, which has significance, as we travel with Emma in England France continuing her research. Despite increased involvement with others, Emma is still deeply troubled, so she needs to find out more about Violet.
Although I really enjoyed this book it did not feel so satisfying or as well constructed as Sally Pages “Book of Beginnings”, but it is a thought-provoking, unusual story.

I enjoyed reading this book. I felt invested in the characters and the story. The dual time line was interesting and added to the unraveling of the mystery. I am thrilled to read a wholesome, well written book without the typical overused plots and romance. The descriptions are so well done that this story seems to live and breath. The flowers and the fragrances filled the pages of my imagination as I read. I recommend this book as a refreshingly and entertaining read.

This book fascinated me, as I also love flowers. This story is so beautiful....I had to be long for all the descriptions and meanings of flowers. This got to my heart, and so much of the story is the same way I have felt, so it had special meaning for me. All who have loved, love flowers, and have memories and feelings about love, wonder, and memories will lose themselves in this! So wonderful! A great experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely and Interesting Take on Flowers and the Titanic
Reviewed in the United States on 8 April 2025
Sally Page really knows how to get inside a characters head and heart and display it for all to see or in this case, read. I loved this book. Emma was a strong female lead but vulnerable too. Using the flowers and tying it into the Titanic was fascinating. I had never thought about the regular workers and staff on the boat before. I ended up looking up some of the interesting facts she talked about in the book. What a lovely story about a woman coming back from a very difficult place. Sally Page, I love how your mind works. Please keep writing.
