The evidence against Stasia appears overwhelming, and Orville arrests her. It looks like the case is closed, but Vera isn't so sure. There are almost too many clues indicating Stasia is the killer, leading her to suspect someone is setting Stasia up. Besides, what about the mysterious ghostly creature skulking around town at night? Maybe he or she was involved? As Vera investigates further, her sleuthing puts her in direct opposition to Orville, and soon she's stirred up a hornet's nest of trouble.

Juneau Black is the pen name of authors Jocelyn Cole and Sharon Nagel. They share a love of excellent bookshops, fine cheeses, and good murders (in fictional form only).     This is the fourth book in the Shady Hollow series and they just keep getting better and better!

    If you are already a fan, as I am, then you know what to expect (and you won’t be disappointed) but for those new to the series, this is a classic mystery story but with the twist that all of the characters are anthropomorphic animals… like Beatrix Potter but for older readers who prefer murder investigations over fluffier adventures.

    Vera, Orville and all the old favourites return here along with the introduction of an otter family with something of a Romeo and Juliet situation going on, whose forbidden love leads to a very public tragedy. Orville is content to merely follow where the clues lead him, but as usual Vera Vixen’s nose for news is twitching and she suspects that there is more to events than meets the eye.

    For once, I managed to guess the how of this whodunnit (I’m usually better at the who and why!) but was thrown off the scent successfully by a prickly subplot that kept me guessing.

    These are delightfully fun, light and gentle mystery reads, perfect for those new to the genre who prefer their mysteries on the non-violent side, and I wholeheartedly recommend both this book and the whole series.

    I just love this series so much. All of these books are five star reads and are just the coziest mysteries.

    Twilight Falls (book four) centers around Vera Vixen, Shady Hollow's resident crime-solving reporter, as she works to solve a murder case surrounding two star crossed lovers--Stasia and Jonah. When Jonah's disapproving father falls from the top of Twilight Falls, Stasia finds herself the main suspect in his murder investigation. Convinced of Stasia's innocence, Vera takes it upon herself to get to the bottom of what really happened at Twilight Falls.

    It is also important to note that while these books *could* be enjoyed as standalones as they each center around a new mystery, there are references to previous plot lines as well as characters that have been introduced in previous novels. I definitely recommend reading them in order!

    The Shady Hollow books feel like Agatha Christie meets Beatrix Potter where woodland creatures live peacefully (most of the time-except for the occasional murder) in a small, cozy town. These books are a comfort series of mine and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a series that will keep you engaged and eager to find out what happens, while also still maintaining an overall low-stakes feel.

    Only Juneau Black can make a murder mystery truly feel cozy!

    If you are looking for something different, this is the series for you. Shady Hollow is a town of forest animal characters that talk and have lives similar to people. Each book is a mystery and transports you to a magical place the way you loved books as a child, but does it in an adult way. These books are not for kids.
