The Shadows of Pike Place (A Thomas Austin Crime Thriller Book 2) Kindle Edition
When the matriarch of a rich Seattle family dies under suspicious circumstances, private investigator Thomas Austin is on the case. This time, the suspect list is easy.
Seven people were in the lakefront mansion with the millionaire when she died: a spoiled son, a jealous brother-in-law, a beloved chef, a rebellious grandson, an arrogant memoirist, and a pair of successful daughters. All had motive. All had opportunity. But which one is the killer?
To solve the case, Austin must look into the past of one of Seattle's most powerful families. With the help of a fiery reporter and a long-lost diary, he uncovers a series of dark secrets that betray the criminal underbelly of old-money Seattle.
But the closer Austin gets to the truth, the more dangerous the investigation becomes. Sometimes, when you dig into a secret past, the past comes out to bury you.
Classic detective fiction meets a Pacific Northwest setting in this crime thriller perfect for fans of Mary Stone, Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Victor Methos.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2022Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis second case for PI Thomas Austin sees him tangling with an old money family. Money has always brought power and Austin soon finds out there are layers of protection that he is unable to break through. Luckily, Austin isn’t on his own.
The story progresses at a modest pace, saving the twists for later but the wait is well and truly worth it. And the truth behind the death of Austin’s late wife, Fiona, is brought to the fore.
Really strong plotting and another very readable outing for a PI who’s very easy to like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Discovered
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI have just discovered this Author and really enjoyed the first book of Thomas Austin series loaned to me by a friend so even though they are really expensive I decided to get the next two books. I wish they were not so pricey but a great suspenseful read. I do not own a Kindle and love to hold a book and turn the pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars The story is suspenseful and engrossing with a great plot.
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase“The Shadows of Pike Place” is the third book I have read by D. D. Black about Thomas Austin, a former New York detective who retired from his job after his wife was murdered. He now runs a café and bait shop in Hansville, near Seattle in Washington. I love Mr. Black’s style of writing as it is easy to understand and it is fast-paced.
This book is about the murder of the head of a multi-millionaire Seattle family and all her relatives and employees are suspects in her murder. Austin teams up with an old friend, an investigative reporter, Anna Downey, who was initially employed to write as a ghostwriter for a memoir for the eight-two-year-old Eleanor Johnson.
After requests from the local police in the first book, Austin decided to become an occasional consultant when crimes are committed. Because of this, Anna Downey asked for his help to discover the murderer. They had some trouble with the head of the police in Seattle but managed to obtain some assistance from their local police friends.
During this investigation, Austin discovers some clues about the murder of his district-attorney wife in New York and this is an ongoing mystery in these books.
Austin and Downey manage to retrieve clues from Eleanor Johnson’s diaries which leads them to solving the mystery. The story is suspenseful and engrossing with a great plot.
I’m sure I will be purchasing more of D. D. Black’s books about Thomas Austin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ending was Sufficient for Top Rating...
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI decided to try the next book in series to see if it continued in the same type of dark plot... It did not, although it is still a traditional murder mystery... A Thomas Austin Crime Thriller and I came to appreciate the main character much more as I started this book. It is set in the midst of a wealthy family where there is just the matriarch remaining with the family and who is quite tight with the purse strings. On the other hand, the family in toto is so rich that they have an annual budget set aside for projects based upon an annual budget. But this year, there was quite a change in that group meeting where each family member old enough to participate, plus the family cook had been with them so long that he had been added... This year each request was funded for a limit of $1M because it was discovered that the matriarch had her own project which she deemed much more important to her upcoming retirement...
It was that same night as all the family members were gathered that she died painfully...from poison...
Eleanor had become somewhat of a food snob as she had gained the head of household position. Their cook was quite willing to participate and she would suggest a type of food or food from a country and each occasion's menu would be based upon that choice... It was later shown that she had died from oleander poisoning--a single leaf may kill an adult!
The investigation, of course, begins with talking with all of the family members who had attended that event about use of charitable funds--would anybody kill because they didn't get the projected budgt they wanted for their own idea? Bottom line, however, is that an unexpected twist near the end of the book blows the entire investigation into a much more broader look at just who this family really was...
For those who like to be kept guessing...this one is for you! I enjoyed it, especially with the teammate of the main character who becomes involved when she was first asked to write Eleanor's memoir--and then lost the job... Tension between her and the new writer adds a turn that can't be ignored by anybody!
