The Truths We Burn (The Hollow Boys Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 5,539 ratings

Beneath the deepest parts of Ponderosa Springs lied secrets that we never meant to be uncovered.

Blood has soaked the hands of those we trusted most. Decrepit intentions finally come to light.

And now truths are ready to be incinerated in the open for everyone to witness.

I was ready to watch this town that made me the villain, Rot in front of my eyes, but it seems ghosts don’t stay buried here either.

Everyone’s favorite sweetheart has returned to Hollow Heights dragging nothing but unanswered questions and grim memories behind her.

A distraction I can’t afford with the police sniffing around.

A mistake that torched my last piece of humanity.

The dirty little secret that has returned searching for closure surrounding her sister’s mysterious death.

But I know the innocent, lost girl is an act. Underneath it’s just another part of her show.

They all are eating from the palm of her hand, puppets on her string.

But not me.

I see her for what she truly is, I always have.

A fake. A manipulator. A liar.

I won’t let her ruin all we have worked for. I refuse to let her derail our plan of vengeance.

I’ve played your game once before, Sage, now it’s time to play mine.

And you’re not making it out without getting burned.

    4.5🌟
Rook x Sage truly delivered in the angst and pain department. I loved their book so much, from the ongoing plot to the chemistry of the couple, it was everything I could have asked for. THEY were everything and more. Monty really spoilt us when it came to the tropes included. Enemies-to-lovers, forbidden/secret romance, and second chance. Each trope served just as much as the couple themselves. One of my favourite things about Rook and Sage is how they were able to find comfort within each other amble all the chaos around them. The rawness these characters hold is next level; their pain was visceral I could feel it coming off the page and into myself.

“I know I have him, and I no longer have to face the darkness alone, because he is the light that never goes out.”

My darling Sage! Oh how reading about what she went through broke my heart. when sage’s backstory is revealed you get more of an understanding of why she was first portrayed at the ‘mean girl’. It was all an act. A mask. Something to hide behind and protect herself. The only way to ensure that nobody would be able to break her again. But what I loved to see was how she slowly let Rook in. He broke down her walls and freed her heart. It was so beautiful to see. Yet through it all Sage was such a strong FMC. At time she maybe have come across at cold to others—especially towards her twin sister, but the affect Rosemary’s death had on Sage was earth shattering for her. While she was seen as selfish, all of her actions was to protect Rose, I can’t think of anything more loving. We got to see Sage before and after her sisters death, and the badass woman we’re left with at the end of it all is my favourite of all!

"I had already been ruined. Cain had already broken me in. Made me accustomed to what happens in that kind of life. Rosemary wasn't-she was free and happy. There was no reason for me to ruin that because I wanted to be selfish."

Sweet sweet Rook. He fully has my heart. This man? just damnnn. Rook has a penchant for pain, using it as a form of punishment on himself. He’s always so quick to blame himself for the wrongs that happen to his family and friends—even when they’re not his fault, which is most of the time, yet he still takes on the burden of blame. That’s what he says in order to justify his father’s abuse.

I’m the beginning Rook saw Sage as selfish, but once he got to really know the girl under the mask he realised that there more to her than she lets on. He was obsessed with having her and protecting her, which I adored. And also the way he allowed himself to fall in love with Sage; he thought he was undeserving of love and unable to love. But that changed when he allowed himself to fall.

Through the ending of Act I, beginning of Act II my heart truly broke with Rook. This is where the angst and pain hit the most. But I guess I’m a masochist because I ate it—and them—all up. The way Sage broke his heart could be seen as unforgivable, yet when Rook finds out why she had to do what she did he eventually forgives and learns to trust her again.

“The only real place I’d felt anything close to happy was when I was near her.”

Each of them has amazing growth. I loved Rook’s character development because he was able to learn what love feels like and for Sage, she able able to let go of her masks and be herself not what she thought she had to be for others—something I think we can all relate to on some level.

Finally I need to talk about the friendships/found family element in this book and throughout the series. The connection The Hollow Boys have is wholesome I love how these guys will do anything for one another no questions asked, they have each others backs. Also, I loved Sage’s new found friendship with Lyra and Briar. Sage hadn’t known true friendship before so I was so happy for her that she was able to experience what that was like with the girls.

Also, the crumbs we got for Thatcher x Lyra was just right. I mean the closet incident? why does she have his things, hmm? Hehe. OH bath Silas, let’s not forget him. He’s probably been through the most turmoil, but I loved the glimpses into his family, as well as his ending in the book, it made me want his book even more—just to see him happy.

Book 2 was absolutely great. My heart truly felt for sage and everything she had been through. The amount of evil done in the name of religion is terrifying but I digress. I loved this book and everything in it. The only thing too unbelievable was fbi agents going missing and a wide scale investigation doesn’t take place. Also I really hate Easton. I want to see him gone by the end of this series because there is something about him that irks me. I loved rook & sage together. It was so nice to see her make genuine friends with the girls. One of the best parts of this book. Poor Silas man I can’t wait for his HEA. The plot thickens with the halo group and I wonder what comes next. Really looking forward to lyra and thatcher story next!

I went into this book unsure of how I’d feel, especially based on how certain characters were portrayed in the first installment. I wasn’t fully sold on them back then—and honestly, I didn’t think I could be. But The Truths We Burn completely flipped the script for me. I didn’t just enjoy it—I devoured it. I’m officially obsessed.

One of the biggest highlights for me was how much deeper we get to go into the characters. They feel so much more fleshed out in this book. Their motivations, their trauma, their messy emotions—it all hits harder this time around. I found myself actually rooting for characters I was unsure about before, which is a testament to how well the author built them up. The emotional stakes are higher, and the choices they’re forced to make are heavier, which made everything so much more compelling.

Compared to book one, there’s a noticeable increase in action and drama. The pacing is tighter, the tension is thicker, and the plot twists? Brutal in the best way. The revenge arcs and betrayal moments had me fully glued to the page. You can feel that the characters are in deep now—too far gone to back out—which only adds to the intensity. There’s no “safe zone” in this book. Every scene felt like it had consequences.

And let’s talk about the atmosphere—it’s dark, moody, and chaotic in a way that completely worked for the story. That underlying sense of danger and unpredictability kept me on edge. The stakes felt real, and the emotional gut-punches hit harder because of it.

Overall, The Truths We Burn is everything I wanted from a sequel and more. It took everything that worked in book one and amped it up—more character depth, more plot, more emotion. I loved seeing the characters unravel and evolve, and now I’m more invested than ever in what’s coming next.

Still torn between a 4 and 4.5-star rating, but honestly? It’s leaning high.

The whole branding thing was so unnecessary and made it weird similar to the first book at tattoo thing. It was random and didn’t add to the plot

I love them. 🔥🔥🔥Book 1 did not prepare me for how hard I was going to fall for them and this whole book. Getting the backstory on the Hollow Boys was what missing for me in book 1. Seeing glimpses of Rosemary and Silas made it all so much more real. My poor baby boy Silus.

But what I love the most was watching them actually fall in love. This book is dark yes, but it’s also surprisingly so sweet and tender. They go through so much and you just ache for them as you read it.

Ready for Tatcher’s book, if anyone can handle him it might just be Lyra.

Lucifer and Lilith's love story. That's the best way to describe this beautiful book. Monty Jay has this way of writing that feels like you are reading an old myth or story, one that has been around for centuries but it's always captivating no matter when it's read.

Rook and Sage are two broken pieces that found each other and healed together, very much like every couple of this series. And it's beautiful. It's freaking beautiful.
