4.6 out of 5 stars 6,748 ratings

'Eat Smart: Secrets of the Glucose Goddess' is now showing on Channel 4

Dietary science is on the move. For decades, people were wrongly focused on reducing fat and calories, whereas we now know that the real trouble-makers are the foods that deregulate our blood sugar levels.

In writing both clear and empathetic, biochemist Jessie Inchauspé explains why blood sugar spikes are so bad for us and how to flatten those spikes to transform our health.

By analysing decades of research and running thousands of original experiments on herself wearing a continuous glucose monitor, she has distilled 10 simple and surprising hacks that can be easily incorporated into everyday life.

By the end of this book, you'll be aware of how food impacts your biology. You'll know which breakfast choices may be causing your cravings, in which order you should eat the food on your plate, what not to do on an empty stomach, which foods lead to mood swings, and how to avoid being sleepy at 3pm. You'll evolve the way you eat, take control of your health, and your life will flourish.

These "hacks" really work!
5 out of 5 stars
These "hacks" really work!
This book is chock-a-block with helpful advice about balancing your blood sugar. What is considered "normal" glucose levels is not ideal at all, especially as we get older. Using the hacks in this book, I'm able to flatten my glucose curve with minimal effort. I'm not diabetic but my glucose metabolism must be dysregulated as I often have sugar crashes - now that I know what causes them, I'm able to avoid them completely - without even cutting out carbs. My diet is pretty healthy based on wholefoods avoiding added sugar and ultra-processed foods, but that alone is not enough to balance your glucose levels. Carbs are the culprits but we need carbs! Good carbs, that is - from wholegrains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, dairy (lactose is sugar!), etc. I don't subscribe to the keto agenda - I think that might work short-term, especially for people who need to lose a lot of weight, but it can be damaging to others. Jessi's "hacks" allow you to have your cake and eat it too! No, she doesn't advocate cake eating, but you don't need to give up occasional treats either if you know how to avoid those pesky spikes, which then cause your blood sugar to crash and make you even hungrier! I've got a CGM fitted to test the claims in this book and I can see that they are 100% true – not a hype! I attach my log-book from yesterday showing my glucose levels – they are very stable – my last meal was at 6pm – I started with a salad dressed in vinegar and then consumed a pretty high carb meal of spaghetti Bolognese and baked beans followed by a latte and even a biscuit. This would have normally sent my glucose levels flying through the roof but thanks to eating fibre first plus the added benefits of the vinegar, my glucose levels hardly rose and were sustained for a long period before settling for the night. I didn’t need a night time snack, like I normally do! All through the night I was at around 4.2 – and I slept through the night! I normally wake up every two hours having to use the toilet! I attribute this good night’s sleep to my stable blood sugar levels. By comparison, earlier in the day a breakfast of just 30g of no-added sugar raisin wheats consumed on an empty stomach spiked my glucose to over 7 and caused a sugar crash 90 mins later! I couldn’t believe that such a tiny amount of “healthy” cereal would have this effect on my blood sugar. Buy the book – it will change your life! I also suggest that you invest in a CGM as a one-off to validate the claims in this book experimenting on your own body – you’ll be amazed!

Imagine stumbling upon a book that doesn’t just claim to change your life but actually has the credentials to back it up. That’s exactly what happened when I read "The Glucose Revolution" by Jessie Inchauspé.

Jessica is a French biochemist whose exploration into the world of glucose led to this eye-opening read. Published in 2022, this book delves deep into the effects of glucose on our body, mind, and emotions. It’s all about the science behind glucose's impact and how we can mitigate its negative effects.

Jessie Inchauspé isn’t just another author hopping on the latest trend; she’s a biochemist dedicated to this cause. Her expertise is clear, and she’s a knack of making complex scientific concepts about glucose accessible to everyone. The book systematically navigates through personal anecdotes, scientific breakthroughs, and practical advice, making it a comprehensive guide on dealing with glucose in our diets.

What struck me the most was how the book balances its scientific depth with practicality. It's loaded with easy-to-implement tips that can significantly reduce glucose consumption and its effects. The author's personal journey adds a layer of authenticity and relatability, making the science not just understandable but also applicable.

Critique-wise, I approached the book with a healthy dose of skepticism, as I do with any book proclaiming life-altering advice (actually, the proclamations cake from friends, not the book). However, Inchauspé’s thorough research and clear, layman's terms explanations left me without any substantial criticism. It’s rare to find a book that feels both pioneering in its field and yet so grounded and practical.

The impact of "The Glucose Revolution" is broad and significant, offering invaluable insights and tips that I found immediately beneficial. From improving my focus to eliminating the dreaded afternoon slump (it’s actually gone - completely!) - the practical applications of Inchauspé’s advice have made a noticeable difference in my daily life.

It’s a book I would confidently recommend to virtually anyone. Whether you're struggling with weight issues, mood swings, sleep problems, or just want to understand the role of glucose in your diet, this book has something for you.

Reflecting on my personal journey with this book, it has taught me much more than just the science of glucose. It has practically shown me how to implement changes that have improved my wellbeing. I read it somewhat reluctantly at first, at the behest of my partner, but I’ve come to see its value far beyond its pages. It’s not just about knowing that too much sugar is bad; it’s about understanding the pervasive influence of glucose and how simple, yet powerful, it is to take control of its impact.

As for my final thoughts, "The Glucose Revolution" isn't just another book on my shelf. It stands out as a potentially life-changing read and might just secure its spot in my top five books for 2024.

For anyone who eats food, this book isn't just recommended; it's necessary.

I bought this book after recent blood tests showed that I had raised glucose levels that suggested I may be diabetic. While waiting for the results of further tests I decided to educate myself about the condition itself, to research what glucose does to the body, and to see how I could help improve my health. By happy circumstance I came across The Glucose Revolution book. This book is really excellent because it explains complex science in such a simple yet engaging way that I could not turn the pages fast enough and, oh my goodness what an eye-opener it is. I have been following the advice contained within it for over a week now and I already feel the benefit of its approach. I'm amazed at how good my skin feels and that those issues with the IBS I've suffered from for years have disappeared. I have had no snack cravings either. I'm a 69 year old who was beginning to feel a wee bit past their sell-by date. However, thanks to the advice in this book, in this last week I feel better than I have for years. It may well transpire that I do have type 2 diabetes but now I have the knowledge and determination to deal with this accordingly. Thank you so much, Jessie Inchauspé.

Liked: An easy read with non condescending scientific explanations. No extreme diets involved. Just food sequencing which makes sense and I’m guessing works. The concept is not new however.
Disliked, or rather wasn’t impressed: Like many books of this type it could have been a quarter of the size. After the food sequencing concept the other hacks (don’t like ‘hacks!’ But thats my old age showing!) were a bit of padding. I started to feel that the book was heading for self promotion and this was validated when on page 128 there was the promotion of an ‘anti spike’ supplement which here in the UK costs just under £50.00.
Frankly speaking this is pretty standard with these books. Michael Mosley did it as did Aseem Malhotra annd many others. And who can blame them. They have to make a living. But it doesn’t sit well with me. Fame and making a living can become quite blurred.
A good book though and would I buy it again: Yes.

No soy médico.

I've had this in my Amazon cart for over a year but always prioritized other books. When Amazon opened in S. Africa recently, I had to get it, coz that meant I didn't have to wait the usual two weeks to get it from Amazon.com.

All I can say is, it's tied up so many loose ends for me and the information in here is life changing. I have been raving about it at work amongst my female colleagues and sharing everything that I've learnt.

I've just started incorporating the practices in here to help with my PCOS symptoms and I can tell you, I'm just blown away coz it's working. Learning how to regulate my glucose levels and keep a steady level makes all the difference and this literally translates into weighloss.

PCOS girls need to read this book. It's an absolute gem
