The story and the characters were interesting and intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Glad the manipulative people in Lottie’s life didn’t ruin the happy ending she deserved.

In which dear Nate Crawford, Talavera veteran and loyal friend of the hero and heroine in ‘A Gentleman’s Promise’, finds his own heroine, Lottie Benham.

This is a glorious take-you-out-of-yourself Regency romance, a fast-paced adventure where success is by no means certain, made utterly believable by Penny Hampson’s sensitive portrayals of her protagonists. Crawford is not the ‘Colonel Brandon with a twinkle in his eye’ that he appears, but struggles with self-doubt and debilitating pain. Lottie has the courage and presence of mind to escape a cousin who means her harm, yet is confused by her responses to Crawford. But through shared dangers Lottie and Nate learn not to dismiss possibilities that seem too good to be true. By the closing pages Nate’s eyes are twinkling and Lottie is luxuriating in their sparkle.

May there be many more Gentleman tales, and may we be reacquainted with Nate and Lottie.

I’m not generally a big fan of Regency Romance, but if I were I’d love ‘An Officer’s Vow’. A dashing hero (Nate) meets a brave heroine (Lottie) who is running away from a fate that may well be literally worse than death. A dastardly cousin and a heritance feature.

Nate whisks Lottie to the safety of his father’s house where he decides that, for reasons of plot, he can only guarantee her safety if he marries her. Fortunately he is already madly in love, but feels it would be taking advantage of her to mention the fact. She, of course, has fallen madly in love with him, but feels it would be taking advantage of his sense of duty to demand his affection. So the scene is set for the two of them to rebuff each other’s tentative advances for – well possibly for ever so slightly too long, if I’m absolutely honest, though Penny Hampson gets some amusing mileage and a lot of deeply repressed lustful imaging out of the situation.

Nate then decides, following the urging of a deeply suspect Duke whose motives are obviously murky, to take Lottie from the safety of the moated manor where she is securely stowed and carry her along the road north to Gretna Green.

I get complaints that I put spoilers in my reviews, so those of a sensitive disposition should look away now, but what was mainly keeping me going at this point was a pretty definite feeling that Nellie would be carried off by the evil cousin before they reached Gretna. Was I right? Did I mention that I’m not allowed spoilers?

There are damn Froggie spies too, and the safety of the country being at stake. Nellie is satisfyingly plucky and the sort of gel who is happy to drive a knee sharply into the groin of men who deserve it. And a good thing too, because there’s a house of ill-repute to be negotiated and the Regency equivalent of the White Slave Trade.

It’s surprisingly historically convincing (lovely descriptions of clothing and a writer who clearly appreciates the history of breakfast) and, though it is clearly tosh, it keeps carefully within the rules of the genre. There will be no surprises, but I read it just as the government was cancelling Christmas and some escapist fiction with no surprises was just what I wanted. I read the whole thing very fast and (though I despise myself for it) enjoyed it enormously.

If romance and excitement and every Regency trope that can be crammed in looks like the sort of thing you’d like, I can recommend this wholeheartedly.

Tired of all the doom and gloom around me, I decided to reach for something that would cheer me and draw me into a different world. I have certainly found it in An Officer's Vow. It is a classic Regency romance with a pinch of adventure and good dose of genteel humour. In this book you will find everything you would expect from Regency romance: an endearing and feisty damsel in distress, a handsome but somewhat insecure around the opposite sex veteran of Napoleonic wars, greedy and unscrupulous fortune hunters, cold-blooded spies and an array of unforgettable characters. You will hurtle from one misadventure into another at a gallop, with little time to catch your breath.
Hampson is clearly on a first-name basis with the era. She conveys the setting details and the linguistic style of that century with ease. You feel like the book was written two hundred years ago by the likes of Jane Austin.
All in all, I relished every minute of this delectable story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Adventurous Historical Romance

Penny Hampson has given us a delightful read with her “An Officer’s Vow.” It has well-drawn characters one roots for and villains you are dying to see upended. There’s adventure, betrayal, unexpected turns, danger and triumph. At the center of the story are two strong-wiled, well-matched lovers who keep getting in their own way. The author’s writing provides a balanced mix of narrative, action and engaging dialogue and her attention to historical detail is admirable and presented with a deft hand. I very much enjoyed this book set in the Regency period and recommend it to lovers of this genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Regency Drama with a Plucky Heroine

Lottie flees her obnoxious cousin. Nate Crawford is on his way home after being wounded in battle. Lottie is on the run, from an unwanted suitor. Nate believes that his life is at an end because of his crippling injury. They meet – and their tale begins.
In this regency drama, Ms Hampson pulls all stops and throws in Lottie’s friend Harriet Spencer, French spies, a duke, his friend and secretary, the leader of a bawdy house, as well as various people serving the main characters as maids, innkeepers etc.
An Officer’s Vow throws a different light on the regency period than the books by Jane Austen that concentrate on character development. Here the reader will find tumult and erotic entanglements, all presented in pleasant prose that is easily read. All in all, this escapist confection that is ripe with romance and imbroglios will delight lovers of Regency romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clean, sweet REGENCY romance

Nate was feeling lost and considering suicide when his horse was startled by Lottie and dumped him on the ground. Lottie was running away from home and did not want to be noticed. His injured leg was keeping him from being able to get up so Lottie helped him get up . Little did either of them know that their lives would be forever altered by this event. The story is interesting and well written but there are a few misused words and phrases. Overall a very good book.

I was quite enjoying this regency romance up until 70% through the book, when the author goes off the rails with Lottie’s character. The h is supposed to be a sheltered, sequestered innocent, yet not only can she knee a man sufficiently to escape his presence but can also land a good enough punch to give another one a bloody nose. Things only get more preposterous as she forcefully asserts herself with the H so she can act as a spy for King and country. I agree with another reviewer that the book should have ended after the resolution of her kidnapping.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful romance.
Reviewed in the United States on 24 February 2022
4 1/2 stars. All of the characters were interesting, and they were more than what they seemed to be initially. The plot was a roller coaster ride with its twists and turns. Nate and Lottie were well matched, but they both were so reluctant to admit their feelings that they had constant misunderstandings. It was satisfying when they managed to get married and begin a life together. Occasionally, I thought the book was dragging a bit, but looking back, I appreciate the detail. I’ll look forward to reading more stories from this author.
