Miss Subways: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 459 ratings

The X-Files star and New York Times–bestselling author delivers “a spooky domestic drama that is equal parts Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman” (Kirkus Reviews).

Emer is just a woman living in New York City who takes the subway, buys ice cream from the bodega on the corner, has writerly aspirations, and lives with her boyfriend, Con. But is this life she lives the only path she’s on? Taking inspiration from the Irish myth of Emer and Cuchulain and featuring an all-star cast of mythical figures from all over the world, David Duchovny’s darkly funny fantasy novel
Miss Subways is one woman’s trippy, mystical journey down parallel tracks of time and love. On the way, Emer will battle natural and supernatural forces to find her true voice, power, and destiny. A fairy tale of love lost and regained, Miss Subways is also a love letter to the city that enchants us all: New York.

Miss Subways is a charming and wildly inventive comic novel—fantastical and sardonic; rich in myth, literature, philosophy and satire. David Duchovny has such love for his title character and for her New York that the affection fairly rumbles beneath the book’s riotous surface.” —Jess Walter, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins

“David Duchovny’s Miss Subways is a marvelous, riveting novel on the mystical nature of love. In it, a scarred, unlikely girl becomes a teacher in all meanings of the word. You want to cheer when she takes charge of her destiny. Unputdownable!” —Mary Karr, New York Times–bestselling author of The Liar’s Club

A very well crafted story. It went in a completely different direction than I had expected but that it isn’t a bad thing. Duchovny writes the female protagonist very well and keeps you guessing throughout the story. The wittiest book I have read to date, I chuckled to myself through most of it. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this story. I wasn't sure where it was going to go but the mystical element was a nice surprise. Beautifully written as usual by David and it is a bonus to listen t him read it as well with the added voices of Tia and his daughter West. Would definitely recommend to brighten up these dark times x

David Duchovny's “Miss Subways” focuses on Emer Gunnels and Cuchulain Constance Powers ("Con") who have their lives thrown out of balance when Con's work examining the transmission and transmutation of gods and belief systems from the Old World to the New arouses the ire of Anansi. Bean Sidhe, an Irish demon, offers Emer the ability to save his life and that's when her life gets really weird.

Duchovny blends the mythologies of the various cultures that settled New York City — African, Irish, Chinese, and Jewish — to examine their impact on the settlers' descendants and others in the city. New York also offers its own homegrown mythology, such as sewer alligators and the Miss Subways contest from 1941-1976. Finally, Duchovny works in references to the literary touchstones that have become a modern sacred text, such as Yeats and Nietzsche, thereby further exploring how all of these ideas intersect in our modern culture.

While the basic premise of Old World gods traveling to the New World with their believers follows Neil Gaiman's 2001 novel, “American Gods” (and its 2005 follow-up, “Anansi Boys”), Duchovny uses his work more to examine the nature of choice and romance so that the two authors' works are sufficiently different that one can enjoy them on their own merits. Duchovny's “Miss Subways” is a fun read for those interested in mythology's impact on the modern world and those looking for a novel that, in its own way, tells the history of New York City and, by extension, that of the New World.

I hadn’t read David Duchovny’s previous novels (but I will now). Someone recommended this, and I’m grateful. I love stories I can’t second-guess. And I’m amazed and thrilled at how well he writes the young woman who is his protagonist. Writing about old gods brought to America is daring after Neil Gaiman, but there were times I thought Duchovny does it better. (I know that’s heresy, and anyway the tales are quite different.) This novel surprised and delighted me at every turn. It’s beautifully constructed, realistic even when being unbelievable, believable even when being unrealistic…. And it left me feeling richly satisfied.
