The 48 Laws Of Power (The Modern Machiavellian Robert Greene Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 82,662 ratings

THE MILLION COPY INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
'Sun Tzu better watch his back' New York Magazine
'If power is your ultimate goal, this is the book you need' The Times
'At last, the book to help you scheme your way into the upper echelons of power' Daily Express

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distils three thousand years of the history of power into forty-eight well-explicated laws. As attention-grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers.

Some laws require prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), some stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and some the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"), but like it or not, all have applications in real-life situations.

Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissenger, P T Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded - or been victimised by - power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing or defending against ultimate control.

Product description

Amazon Review

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions, and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."

The laws cull their principles from many great schemers--and scheming instructors-- throughout history, from Sun-Tzu to Talleyrand; from Casanova to con man Yellow Kid Weil. They are straightforward in their amoral simplicity: "Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit," or: "Discover each man's thumbscrew." Each chapter provides examples of the consequences of observance or transgression of the law, along with "keys to power," potential "reversals" (where the converse of the law might also be useful), and a single paragraph cleverly laid out to suggest an image (such as the aforementioned thumbscrew); the margins are filled with illustrative quotations. Practitioners of one-upmanship have been given a new, comprehensive training manual, as up-to-date as it is timeless.

A great book to take back control in your life & daily encounters.

A great book to take back control in your life & daily encounters.
I feel like a lot of info written in the book, I already was doing, but the info was presented to me in a way that was informative, engaging and I learned a lot of new tactics and ' law's ' on how to gain the upper hand in life, but the only law I don't agree with is to keep your enemies closer than your friends, every other 'law' is incredible in my opinion. Anyone who doesn't like the book probably has dependent personality disorder/ is a people pleaser or just a very weak person in terms of character, I am struggling to see these 'sociopathic tendencies' other reviewers have spoken about unless you're specifically referring to Law 2, then yes that would perhaps apply, but you don't have to follow the book to a T, you can pick & choose which laws you want to follow, just like how religious people pick & choose which rules from the archaic fantasy book they follow. If you have a strong personality, but are often in interaction with control freaks, master manipulators & happen to be an empath or just someone who feels used, poorly treated by some and want to change your life, then this book can offer you that. I'm sold personally!!

I really felt uncomfortable reading this book and it took me longer to read than it should, but I pushed through, the historical examples and psychological insights started clicking in unexpected ways. This book helped me understand how power dynamics play out in everything from my college study groups to my part-time job at the coffee shop, and I found myself using some of the more ethical principles like "Make your accomplishments seem effortless" to improve my leadership skills in group projects. Even though some parts felt manipulative, I appreciated how the author keeps it real about human nature and provides stories from history that show these laws in action - like the way Michelangelo played mind games with the Pope to get the Sistine Chapel done his way. To be honest, it sometimes feels like I'm reading a "How to Guide to be a Narcissist," but if you approach it with the right mindset, it's actually a powerful tool for understanding why people act the way they do and how to navigate social situations more effectively

"The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene is a thought-provoking and controversial book that explores the dynamics of power and human influence. Delving into the intricacies of historical and contemporary figures, Greene presents a comprehensive guide to understanding and harnessing power. While some may find the content manipulative or morally ambiguous, the book offers valuable insights into the complex nature of human interactions and the strategies employed by those in positions of power.

One of the strengths of "The 48 Laws of Power" lies in its extensive examination of historical examples. Greene draws upon a wide range of historical figures, from Machiavelli to Napoleon, to illustrate each law's application in real-world scenarios. This historical context adds depth and credibility to the author's arguments, allowing readers to understand how power dynamics have unfolded throughout history. These anecdotes serve as cautionary tales and provide valuable lessons that can be applied to contemporary situations.

The book's structure, with each chapter dedicated to a specific law of power, makes it easily digestible and facilitates selective reading based on individual interests. Each law is presented in a concise and straightforward manner, accompanied by practical examples and strategies. Greene's writing style is engaging, blending storytelling with analysis to keep readers captivated throughout.

However, it is important to note that "The 48 Laws of Power" has its fair share of criticisms. Some argue that the book promotes manipulative and unethical behavior, as the laws often emphasize deception, cunning, and exploitation. It is crucial for readers to approach the content critically and understand that the application of these laws should be done ethically and responsibly. While the book offers insights into the darker aspects of human nature and power dynamics, readers must exercise discernment and moral judgement in their interpretation and application of the laws.

Despite the controversial nature of the content, "The 48 Laws of Power" encourages readers to adopt a strategic mindset, develop a keen sense of observation, and understand the motivations and dynamics of those around them. By shedding light on the power plays and strategies employed by influential individuals, the book equips readers with valuable knowledge that can be applied in various domains, including personal relationships, professional settings, and leadership roles.

In conclusion, "The 48 Laws of Power" is a captivating exploration of the complexities of power dynamics. With historical anecdotes and practical advice, Robert Greene provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the strategies employed by influential individuals throughout history. While the book may raise ethical concerns for some, it serves as a valuable resource for those seeking insights into human behaviour, leadership, and the intricacies of power. It is a thought-provoking read that challenges readers to question their own values and navigate the multifaceted world of power with wisdom and discernment.

Honestly, there’re very, very few who’ve written books like these. It’s a niche genre & it’s hugely popular. In all honesty, I believe if R.G. Could knock out ‘a book a year’ in quantity, people would buy them, every year!

I’ve purchased all of the books both in paperback & digitally because: having these books in your pocket is quite simply a tactical advantage in so many ways in daily life. If you can only afford to do one or the other—go for digital. It tends to be cheaper & you’ve the flexibility of a ‘pocket’ library at your finger tips!

Dear Robert, I know you are busy & living your life; however, if you feel like upping your releases to one every 24 months, I’m there, with you; buying those titles!

Overall a good read, I found the concept of looking at yourself first was quite powerful but it did feel like it pushed quite a controlling mentality and as someone who is autistic I found a lot of it was stuff I related to (whether that was bias or not is yet to be seen) and I also found a lot of difficult to act on for the same reason
