Hannah and Owen live a normal and perfect life. One day all that changes when Owen manages to smuggle a simple note to his wife reading “Protect her” – his 16 year old daughter from his first marriage.
This book has a very good plot, that keeps you guessing as Hannah sets out to unravel her husband’s past in the hope this will lead her to the truth about why he disappeared. We also watch the relationship between stepdaughter and stepmother grow as they discover more about each other, begin to trust, and learn to become a family, despite the heartache both are facing.
What would you do for love?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2022A Reese's Book Club novel, The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave is a slow-burn psychological thriller, but not a particularly fast-paced one.
Hannah and Owen are newly married and living, on the surface, a perfect life in Sacramento. The only fly the ointment is Owen's 16-year-old daughter from a previous marriage. Bailey is a typical teenager, whose affections Hannah is yet to gain. The girl lost her mother at the age of only 11, so Hannah knows it will take time for her to get used to Owen's new love. Besides, Hannah knows what it's like to live without parents. Her own single mother abandoned her at an early age.
When Hannah receives a cryptic note from Owen, who promptly disappears without a trace, she immediately knows what she needs to do: Protect Bailey, whether the girl wants her to or not.
But first, she needs to find out why Owen has left her alone with Bailey. When the news breaks that the CEO of the company he worked for, a software start-up, has been arrested for fraud, Hannah is even more confused. Why wouldn't her honourable husband stay and face the music to show that he wasn't involved in any criminal activity? Because, surely, he is innocent?
When she is interviewed by the FBI and a mysterious U.S. marshall pays her a visit, Hannah begins to investigate Owen's past to find clues to where he might have fled to. Her investigations lead to Austin, Texas, and to some very dangerous people. Suddenly, it becomes very clear why Owen asked her to keep Bailey safe.
The Last Thing He Told Me keeps you reading in spite of its slow pace. At first, you think the story is straightforward, but twist after twist keeps you guessing and turning the page. A great read, whether you are on the beach or enjoying a book by the fire.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2021This was a fast-paced read, it was quite gripping and I finished it quickly. But there were fundamental issues like
1. The lack of suspense- even though the story has promise, it’s not really exciting. There’s no antagonist chasing Hannah (main character) trying to cover the truth or any meaningful confrontation
2. It didn’t seem believable- it just so happens that the main character (a wood turner) is also a mock detective with killer instincts, ALL of which work out in this book. Not one wrong turn. Recalling and deciphering a memory from months and sometimes years ago. It all happened far too easily to seem plausible, and there was no real chase. Hannah discovers everything within two days (the majority of the book taking place in 3-4 days)😕
3. The flat ‘climax’ in which we find out what happened to Hannah’s husband and his ‘sordid’ history- This was so uncreative and not really all that interesting. When I read this ‘plot twist’ I thought ‘is that it? That’s all??’
It is an easy read and it was intriguing but I kind of finished it going ‘meh’. I would never recommend this to a friend saying ‘oh my gosh this book is so amazing, you should definitely read it’.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 March 2023Really enjoyed reading this book and getting to know Hannah. A Love Story ? The greatest of love stories where it hurts so much but you know it to be true.
The small details of her grandfather and how she overcame being left behind where insightful and beautiful.
A perfect holiday or break read.
Escapism at its best .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 July 2024Really enjoyed this book. Thought the idea behind the story was a really good one. The characters were strong and well developed. Lots of great twists and turns. Really liked the ending, thought it was handled well (no spoilers!). If you like a good mystery this good for you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2021I couldn't put this book down. It took twists I didn't expect. I don't usually like first-person narratives, but this is probably the only way this story could be told. The reader is completely sucked into the story and experiences the reveal along with the protagonist. The relationship dynamics, the tension, the crescendo are so credible and superbly written. I can't wait for more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2024Okay, for me it almost anything can be a page turner if it's not written particularly badly. I picked this up after seeing the apple tv series, and I have to be honest, it is better written I think. But it was a good read, not a really strong plot, I mean it was unbelievable at times and the character progression seemed a bit too fast, but it was enjoyable

“Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his new wife, Hannah: protect her. Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect - his teenage daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.”
I read this book last year in 2 days flat, couldn’t put it down. It is a fast paced thriller which starts off with so many questions it’s hard to know what to focus on! Thankfully they do get answered - BUT I found there was a lack of real urgent suspense so it wasn’t a particularly exciting read, I guessed most of the reveals which weren’t that juicy, and the way that Hannah knew what to do at every turn throughout the book was unrealistic to me. It has a very intriguing premise which meant the journey was interesting enough, I just found that the story behind it all at the end fell a bit flat… curious to see what Reese does with it on TV though!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book to read
Owen Michael who has a beautiful teenage daughter 'Bailey' from his first marriage marries Hannah Hall. A little over an year after marriage he disappears into oblivion with a last two word note "Protect Her" to Hannah and which forms the focal point of the book "The Last Thing He Told Me".The suspense of the story goes through many a twists and turns & the curiosity never seems to be ending until the last page of the book. It's not just the suspense that holds but the feelings & emotions that comes out of the characters are very much intresting.A father's love for his daughter, a grandfather's love for his granddaughter and above all a mother's love for her daughter stands tall in the story (Hannah's love for Bailey)& it is this love & trust that Owen sees in Hannah & the same comes out through her with out even her knowing as how deep & far Owen has thought under the circumstantial events he anticipated & imagined.A book to read and reread for the suspense and for the Values it holds. A fabulous book to read and enjoy.Loved reading all through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read with twist
I enjoyed this book but was not sure what to expect. Reading the blurb and reviews I really had no idea what type of book this would be. It kept me interested but I think it wasn't what I had in mind. It was a good book and worth a read just don't go in with any expectations and you'll enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars An unfinished screenplay, not a novel.
The characters lack believable motivation, their actions are not believable and border on insane, and the book is poorly paced. This reads like an unfinished screenplay, not a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story
I'm surprised at the negative reviews. This book was exactly as advertised: a thriller based on the sudden disappearance of a husband/father. It was compelling, as it dealt with the shock of the disappearance, the lead character's relationship with her stepdaughter, and her gradual search for answers. An excellent story.
