'A truly outstanding series' Booklist
‘No CCTV cameras, no overlooking houses, no passing traffic or pedestrians. That means no witnesses.’
Bill Slider begins a nightmarish investigation when an unidentifiable victim is found in the no man’s land beneath London’s A40 flyover. Slider doesn’t have much to go on, the victim, a smartly dressed businessman, has no ID in his pockets and no one has reported him missing. When the autopsy reveals old injuries and faded scars cover the man’s body, the mystery only deepens. If he wants answers, Slider knows he must go into London’s darkest corners.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2019Shadow play - Bill Slider series No.20.
I have been reading the Bill Lider novels for quite a long time, I like the style, the humour, and seeing the characters unfold as extras are added to their 'personalities' and they grow a little more in each book.
As always, this is a good read, CHE has the gift of being able to construct a good story, giving pleasure to the reader as it slowly unfolds, and with Bill Slider, to execute a plot which is believable, workable, interesting and possible. But I don't think this is her 'best ever'. It seemed very short, rather simplistic, and whilst it kept me interested, it didn't leave me wanting to get to the next chapter. It was ok, but that all.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2018Another well-written and entertaining book featuring Bill Slider and his team doing what they do best. Good plotting, with the author skilfully peeling back the layers before finally revealing the guilty party. The thread of humour running through the book keeps the tone light-hearted and Mr Porson's mangling of the English language is sheer joy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2020Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI don’t know how CHE does it. Most of the book is just chat, but it’s such good chat. I love these guys. The settings are full of life and the mysteries all work. If you haven’t tried this series and you enjoy police procedurals with lots of puns, well drawn relationships and a good murder without too much gore or angst, dive in anywhere.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2021Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI have read every book in the series and have enjoyed them all. Brilliant detective stories. Keeps you guessing "Who done it" right to the end!!
Please let there's a book 21 and onwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable Bill Slider
The latest Bill Slider mystery lives up to the standard set by the earlier novels in the series—a good mystery for the detectives to investigate, an engaging and amusing cast of characters both in the office (Atherton a bit subdued, perhaps) and at home, and the expected jokes and wordplay to lighten the otherwise grim investigation of human vice and folly. The unraveling at the end is a bit too pat, the plot perhaps a bit thin, but fans of Slider will enjoy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, though not the best in this excellent series.
This is a great, long-running series, populated by characters with endearing traits and enough complexity to sustain a reader's longtime interest. Having said that: "Shadow Play" isn't Harrod-Eagles' best work. It's relatively short and lacks the complexity of some of the better books in the Bill Slider series; there's more about the police team than about the personal lives of the protagonists, and Slider's police partner Atherton is given almost no point-of-view. Harrod-Eagles can write a straightforward whodunnit with the best of them, but the reason her fans keep with this series is for the characters, not just the mystery plot. In this one, the recurring characters don't have enough to do and say; there's the hint of a tiny step forward for Atherton's love interest, but that's pretty much it. All the same, I'll probably continue to read this series because of the wit and style of the author and because of my fondness for her milieu here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bill Slider book!
Love Bill Slider! This book was completely satisfactory in every way but one—it was too short! I wlways hate to see these books ending. I thought this was a brand new Bill Slider but it appears to have been published a year or two ago—not sure how I missed it when it first came out. Now I need to find the most recent. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is such a great writer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slider and team excel - once again
These very durable characters solve the latest case thanks to their individual talents. One of the most under rated series I am sure. and I absolutely love Cynthia Harrod Eagles love affair with the English language - almost every page reflects this. I look forward to the next one!
