- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2020Worst in series but to say that a pretty good read. However the class and style are totally alien to me with this one. Feels like A shallow Patterson novel which I read in a day an will forget just as quick. His earlier ones so much better. Story sort of ends with the classic Dirty Harry run around city until it's nano against man at the exciting conclusion which is worth sticking out for. The murder scenes are merely third person descriptions not like his previous ones. Still I am waiting for his next with baited breathe.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 July 2020To say I was excited to read this is an understatement. The only problem with Chris Carter’s books is the time it takes for him to write them. And he had huge personal reasons for taking time to complete this one.
But it was so worth the wait! It was lovely to catch up with Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia again. It was like meeting up with old friends. However, very quickly you are into a new horror and holding your breath.
This story starts with Angela Wood, an experienced pick pocket, stealing the bag of a serial killer. She knows immediately that this is something she doesn’t want to hold on to, so she passes it on to the department in charge of forensically examining evidence for the LA Police. It soon finds its way onto Hunter’s desk, and so begins this nightmare.
This book has less gore than the usual Chris Carter books, but I certainly didn’t miss it. It was replaced by detailed descriptions from the serial killer of the murders he is responsible for. I don’t want to spoil anything for the readers, just let it be said that the murders are shocking and gruesome. Robert seems to have met his match this time.
Regular readers will love this book as it is a worthy addition to the series. It is also readable as a stand alone in my opinion. It’s another long wait for me as I wait for number twelve.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2021Considering the terrible loss Chris suffered during the writing of this novel I am surprised that it is so good. Following Chris on various social platforms and watching him unravel before our eyes was heartbreaking. I take my hat off to you for your bravery.
This book is just as good as the others. Maybe not so technical but I kind of liked that. The story flows along at a fast pace and I couldn’t put the book down. Eager for the next twist or turn and never being disappointed.
Chris’s imagination knows no bounds and the killer in this book is outstanding. What a character he created. A very dark, lethal, ruthless killing machine - without mercy.
His back story is believable and sad but as a reader I was grateful for the knowledge as you often never get answer to why they do what they do.
Hunter, my hero, was superb as always. It’s about time some of these books were made into films as they are that good.
This is a fabulous read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. I am so looking forward to Hunter and Garcia’s next case.
Chris, I hope your heart is healing - I feel your pain - I too am in your shoes and trying to claw my way back up the rabbit hole of grief. Stay strong.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2021Toe curling, fast paced, gripping, thrilling and terrifying. This was crime writing at its best and the first book I’ve read by Chris Carter, and it won’t be the last.
Picture this, you are a career thief / pickpocket and by all accounts a highly skilled one. Then you make one fatal mistake, you decide to snatch the bag from a serial killer, with a journal inside. Soon you learn that if your name is in this diary of horrors, you are already dead, and you have made yourself his next mission. He is out to get his diary back and he will kill you.
This is the worst kind of killer because he is faceless and plans his kills through the dark web, where victims are killed to order and slaughtered for viewing. He will not make mistakes, he will maintain his composure because he is a highly trained killing machine. He operates fast, he knows how to get information and he tracks you down before the day is out. Hunter has to quite literally put his life on the line to stop this assassin and rely on him making one mistake because he knows he cannot outsmart and out manoeuvre the Werewolf.
We have read many stories about the trained assassins, the serial killers and its difficult to make the story unique, different and something people will enjoy reading. The author delivered a great book in crime fiction. I loved the writing style that created the feeling of suspense and fear in this deadly game of cat and mouse with detective Hunter.
Some gruesome details in the diary of horrors that I skimmed past, but otherwise a fabulous read for crime lovers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2023Chris carter amazing as always. Love all his books. Hunter and Garcia are two the best characters I’ve read about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forse il migliore romanzo di Chris Carter

5.0 out of 5 stars A Darkly Twisted Game of Cat and Mouse …
Just when I thought that there couldn’t be a more prolific literary serial killer than Lucien Folter (if you know, you know - but I won’t spoil it), Chris Carter kicked up a few notches and beat himself at his own game.
I lost a lot of late nights to this one and I don’t regret a single moment of them spent with Detective Robert Hunter. The chess match of wits between Killer and Detective kept me glued to the pages, unable to move or look away, losing complete track of time. The ending had me physically holding my breath and urging my brain to simultaneously read faster and stop to savor every deliciously fraught moment …
I find myself recommending this series with the description of “if Law and Order SVU mated with Mindhunter, and had a baby that’s a few notches more dark / twisty, that’s this series”.
Now, I’m off to deal with my book hangover, while I desperately wait for Genesis to come out to reunite with my literary crush…
