The Last Séance: Spooky and chilling ghost stories from the Queen of Crime for a haunted Halloween (Collins Chillers) Kindle Edition
From the Queen of Crime, the first time all of her spookiest and most macabre stories have been collected in one volume.
‘From behind the curtains there still sounded the terrible high long-drawn scream – such a scream as Raoul had never heard. It died away with a horrible kind of gurgle. Then there came the thud of a body falling…’
For lovers of the supernatural and the macabre comes this collection of ghostly and chilling tales from Agatha Christie. Acknowledged the world over as the undisputed Queen of Crime, in fact she dabbled in her early writing career with mysteries of a more unearthly kind – stories featuring fantastic psychic visions, spectres looming in the shadows, encounters with deities, eerie messages from the Other Side, even a man who switches bodies with a cat…
This haunting compendium gathers together all of Christie’s spookiest and most macabre short stories, some featuring her timeless detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Finally together in one volume, it shines a light on the darker side of Agatha Christie, one that she herself relished, identifying ten of them as ‘my own favourite stories written soon after The Mysterious Affair at Styles, some before that’.
- Contains 20 stories:
The Last Séance • In a Glass Darkly • The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb • SOS • The Fourth Man • The Idol House of Astarte • The Gipsy • Philomel Cottage • The Dream • The Lamp • Wireless • The Mystery of the Blue Jar • The Blue Geranium • The Wife of the Kenite • The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael • The Call of Wings • The Red Signal • The Flock of Geryon • The Dressmaker’s Doll • The Hound of Death
‘Reading a perfectly plotted Agatha Christie is like crunching into a perfect apple: pure, crisp, absolute satisfaction.’

About the author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2024This book of short stories did not disappoint! I'm a big fan of Agatha Christie's detective novels, and it's a pleasant surprise to find out that she also wrote ghost stories. It was a pleasurable read, and you can easily visualise the era they were set within, due to her descriptive writing skills. I loved the book, as some of the stories made you really think of the impossible.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2022Well, we all know the Queen of Crime is excellent at mystery and murder, but this volume proves she was also quite adept at stories of the supernatural as well.
There's a few stories here which feature her familiar characters of Poirot and Marple, but by and large they bring a new cast of characters to each story.
Written when these stories were, they harken back to times which seem unfamiliar to us now, but are still recognisable.
On the whole, a great selection of short stories, mostly away from her normal genre - proving that she could turn her hand to almost anything.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 February 2025Great read .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2024I found this book predictably boring and did not enjoy reading it , hence the low rating score.
Some of the stories seem familiar but poorly written. Unlike the author's other books which I love to re-read over and over again , I wouldn't be rereading this one. What do you think, do you agree?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2019If you enjoy tales of mystery with a psychological twist, then this collection is sure to please – 5 Stars
This is an excellent collection of short stories that have a connection to the occult or psychological themes. All are designed to both disconcert and discombobulate the reader…pleasingly, they do this rather well. Some feature well-known characters (Marple and Poirot), some have been adapted for television over the years, while others clearly form the basis for some of the full-length novels, but most Christie fans should find some they are less familiar with.
The tales span several decades of Christie’s writing career, and although not presented in chronological order, it is interesting to see how she adapts her writing to social change. In particular, there is a noticeable change in the way she depicts women within these stories, reflecting a (later) determination to show females as both inventive and intelligent. It’s also possible to identify when supernatural phenomena provided a regular form of entertainment, and when this trend was beginning to be replaced by a more general interest in the criminal mind. And, it’s clear from many of the stories that increased access to transport played an important role in widening plot possibilities for Christie too.
An excellent collection that I’d be happy to recommend to anyone who enjoys short stories that come with a generous helping of mystery.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2021Very good collection of stories by a great writer. Highly recommend.
The sign of a great writer is when they can cross genres and still spin a great yarn.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2019One or two stories I had read previously, and the first story was easy to figure out, but other than that it was hugely enjoyable. Very atmospheric at times .. The strange case of Sir Arthur Carmichael . And at times even a little sad and redemptive.. The Call of Wings . I have read many in both Christie’s and the ghost genre .M.r James etc . And I conclude it was a entertaining book , Go on try it ! U know u want to 🙂

4.0 out of 5 stars Eine nette Erinnerung daran, dass A.C. auch Queen of Grusel war

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN’T GO WRONG WITH AGATHA CHRISTIE
Good mysteries, good characters intriguing stories. Not real sure about the last story in the book. Felt as if it was incomplete. It’s like you’re reading and reading and then it’s over. But I enjoyed all the other short stories in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a book of Agatha Christie's scary and frightening short stories.
I bought this book for myself and will give it to a friend who is also an Agatha Christie fan. Arriving just before Hallowe'en it provided me with seasonal entertainment like so many other stories Christie had written in her lifetime. I have read all of her books at least once. Every now and then a Christie comes out of the woodwork to entertain fans such as myself. And I will keep buying them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, awful delivery
The media could not be loaded.
About the book, it’s not only spooky, but surrounded by mystery, psychological elements and an unexpected deep meaning to the supernatural—beyond the purpose of being scary. The best tales from Agatha Christie
