4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

An altered survivor. An enterprising young woman. A ruthless abduction.

AD 73 Hope and loss

Seriously injured at Whorl, Brennus goes from surviving to thriving the trauma of battle. Taking on the new identity of Bran, he vows to disrupt the Roman conquest of his Brigante territory. Though how can he do this when he is forced to labour for the Roman Ninth Legion?

Ineda helps Bran adjust to his new role. The pair trade with the detested Romans, a fantastic cover for their spying activities. She’s a determined young woman, but making Bran accept her as a lover is the hardest thing she has ever attempted. All seems well till they are attacked by a Roman patrol. Afterwards Ineda cannot be found, the chains of Roman slavery binding her to the Roman tribune named Valerius.

Distraught with Ineda’s loss, can Bran find a new occupation?

The adventures of Bran, Ineda and the Garrigill Clan continue.

Readers who love epic historical tales, set in a spellbindingly turbulent era, will enjoy this first part of the adventures of Bran and Ineda.

“The author brings the culture and society of Celtic Britain vividly to life - and in this book there is also an intriguing contrast with the ordered, militaristic lifestyle of the occupying Romans.”

In this novel, the second of a trilogy set in Britannia 71 AD, Nancy Jardine brings the heartbreaking post-battle trauma experienced by Brennus (hero) to the forefront of his very existence. Although as a well-trained native warrior, when faced with the might of well-trained Roman soldiers, the Brigante's defeat at the Battle of Whorl reveals the weakness of individualistic heroics against that of disciplined Roman team-led assaults and defence tactics. Left for dead, to his chagrin, Brennus' survival is reliant upon the expertise of an aged healing woman (Meaghan), who not only tends to his physical injuries she affords wise counsel. But in the long process of his recovery and the sad loss of his healer, he sheds his old identity as Brennus of Garrigill and instead is reborn as Bran of Witton.

With Witton as his adoptive home, and he too becoming an adoptive son, Bran is as good as sworn to protect his adoptive sister (Meaghan's granddaughter) from harm, which is easier said than done. Ineda proves a force to be reckoned with, and causes Bran (Brennus) more than mere headaches, for he becomes enslaved as a day-worker to Roman supremacy and she remains free to roam within set boundaries. Nonetheless, both are committed to ridding the land of the Roman invaders, occupiers-cum-slave takers, and when opportunities arise for garnering valued knowledge of the enemy and troop movements, Bran and Ineda are as one but find themselves at odds in ways that are to prove fatal for both. And so the saga continues, for suddenly and brutally separated, their roles are reversed, in that Bran is free to roam and Ineda is enslaved. Although each knows where the other's heart lies, can they ever be as one again?

It will be intriguing to see, come book three, when and where Bran (Brennus) and his brother Lorcan (book 1) will meet again, if ever, and what effect the Roman officer's enslavement of Ineda will have upon her wilful streak. Either way, a tribal and Roman Pow Wow is in the offing, but will it bring peace with compromise or a fiery hell-ridden showdown with the Romans? Roll on book 3.

Easy to read book with lots of action, a bit of romance and a glimpse of what it was like when the Romans invaded Britain.

After Whorl - Bran reborn is a sequel to Nancy Jardine's earlier novel, The Beltane Choice. It follows Brennus, a minor character in the first book, maimed and almost killed in battle with the Romans, as he is first nursed back to health by aged healer Meaghan, then struggles to adapt to his disabilities and find a new role for himself. His warrior past behind him, he becomes Bran, a trader, a messenger ... and a spy. Bran's travails, and the tensions in his relationship with his young adoptive sister Ineda are sensitively and intelligently handled, as are the ambiguities, compromises and uncertainties of a land neither wholly conquered nor wholly free. As in The Beltane Choice, the author brings the culture and society of celtic Britain vividly to life - and in this book there is also an intriguing contrast with the ordered, militaristic lifestyle of the occupying Romans. An engaging tale, with fascinating insights into Celtic and Roman Britain.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one but it was the brothers story. It still had . Me intrigued to see what happens in book three.

Bran Reborn follows on from Beltane’s choice which introduced us to a time when rival clans were fighting each other instead of uniting against the Roman invaders. This time we meet up with Bran who is badly injured in a skirmish with the Romans and barely escapes with his life. Bran was a proud warrior at a time when men were mainly valued for their strength and the author paints a convincing picture of a man who finds himself no longer able to excel in battle and is left feeling adrift and searching for a purpose. It was a well-researched book which brings the period to life. My only criticism is that I hadn’t realised that the story ends abruptly at 93% requiring the reader to buy the next book in the series in order to find out what happens next.

A fantastic follow-up to the brilliant Beltane Choice. The author really gets inside the heads of the characters so you completely empathise with, and understand, their feelings and actions - even when you/they disagree with them. Highly recommend this series of novels.

An excellent read. This is the second book book in the trilogy and follows swiftly on from the final pages of the first book.
Well written with excellent characters, Nancy has continued to flesh out the characters further from the first book.
I found the story engaging and intriguing I loved the story and cannot wait for book 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celts vs. Romans

Nancy Jardine's Celtic series has me in its thrall! "After Whorl: Bran Reborn" is the second in this series, which depicts the little reported efforts of the Celts to rid the country of the Roman invaders. Since they face a very organized and well-equipped foe, they rely on their considerable Celtic wits to undermine the subjugation of the hated invaders. The characters are so well formed, I find myself worrying about their welfare, worrying about their romantic lives, and so on.

I admire the descriptions of battle scenes - male authors tend to be a bit too technical with battle scenes for me. Nancy Jardine describes battles clearly, but also with a look at the emotions of the warrior.

I cannot wait for the third novel of the series, due to launch in March, 2014. Hope the author considers expanding the series even further. A wonderful read, I highly recommend "After Whorl: Bran Reborn!"

5.0 out of 5 stars The second even better than the first
Reviewed in the United States on 8 March 2014
After Whorl: Bran Reborn continues the story of the Celts vs the Romans that started in The Beltane Choice. In 71 AD Rome is consolidating its conquest of Britain, while scattered tribes try to fight back. Horribly injured in a major battle, Brennus, the son of a Celt chief, is nursed back to health by an aged healer. Lame and disfigured, he knows he can never be the warrior he once was, so he resolves to fight in other ways and takes the name of Bran. He's helped in his mission by the teenage Ineda, who he gradually falls in love with.

It's a fascinating picture of early Britain and keeps you turning the pages. I'd have preferred a real end to the story of Bran and Ineda, rather than a cliffhanger, but that's my opinion. The next portion of the story is coming soon, so the wait won't be long.
