Fast-paced, domestic noir thriller
4 out of 5 stars
Fast-paced, domestic noir thriller
This is the story of two sisters, Isabel (Izzy) and Jessica. One dead, and one very much alive. Jessica is still mourning the loss of Isabel who died when she fell from a balcony in her home five years ago. Since she was drinking and had drugs in her system, the death was ruled an accident. Isabel was always the prettiest one, the smartest one, the one with so much going for her... Jessica had always felt to be in the shadow of her older, more beautiful sister. Now Jessica is married to Will, and the mother of ten-year-old Felix and four-year-old Olivia. The family live in the London suburb of Beckenham with their aging golden retriever, Caspar. Since Izzy died just weeks after Jessica told her of her pregnancy with Olivia, her young daughter had never had the opportunity to meet her aunt Isabel. Yet lately, Olivia has seemed obsessed with the auntie she never knew... She suddenly seems to intuit things that only Isabel would have known. She seems.... possessed. Jessica wonders if her little daughter has chosen Isabel as an imaginary friend. Can she credit all that is going on to the overactive imagination of a four-year-old? But would that explain all the weird coincidences and Olivia's disturbing behaviour? Olivia seems to predict certain dire events. The death of the school's dinner lady, the burning down of another school, the illness of a goat, etc. How CAN she know this stuff??? There seemed no rational explanation... Olivia is acting out at school. Her room looks as if it had been ransacked and her soft toys have their eyes gouged out. Jessica has always leaned toward belief in spirits. Could Izzy be trying to tell her that she didn't fall from the balcony five years ago? Could she have been pushed??? Is Isabel using her young daughter as a conduit to communicate? Also, Jessica has felt that she is being watched. Several times she spotted a grey Hyundai following her or parked up outside her house. Could Jessica's entire family be in the shadow of her late sister? MY THOUGHTS Once again, Mark Edwards has served a cunning cocktail of genres to his readers. At any one time you are uncertain if this is a mystery? a thriller? domestic noir? or, as is easily assumed, a paranormal thriller. Though I would never spoil it for future readers so you'll have to discover the truth for yourself. What I do know is that the author has a way of keeping the reader engaged. His devious plotting and very real characters make for an enjoyable read. His use of short chapters moves the narrative along. The story is told mostly from Jessica's point of view with a few chapters told by Isabel in the weeks leading up to her untimely death. Having just read another of his novels "Follow you home" I feel I am well versed in his writing technique and can recommend his work to others. Others who, like me, enjoy a good fast-paced thriller.

I swear, I don’t think Mark Edwards could write a book that was boring or utterly unreadable, he surpasses all expectations and goes above and beyond with his writing. At first, I struggled to get into it, but it didn’t take long for the story to take ahold of me. It was dark, sinister and completely mind boggling. As always, this author has a knack for creeping the hell out of readers and well as keeping them on the edges of the sears. And I was no exception (I’m pretty sure I’ve bitten all my nails off!).

When we were introduced to a 4-year-old, Olivia, I was thinking ‘uh oh, creepy kids scare the life out of me’, and she did freak me out on a whole new level. The whole story frightened the heck out of me; I swear even my bones shook with terror!

The characters were flawless, well described and complex. I loved Jessica’s tenacity and fierceness whilst hunting for the truth of what really happens to her sister. I loved her amateur detective mode, that she pull off so damn well you’d think she was actually a professional.

I loved, also, that we get two sides to the story; Jessica and Isabel’s. It made it interesting and revealing. I didn’t want this story to end, like with previous books from this author, and now we have to wait til July for his next head blowing book to arrive!

Although The Retreat is still my absolute favourite, followed closely by The Magpies, this one definitely comes in at number 3 for me, and The Lucky Ones sits at number 4.

This author is absolutely incredible and creating creepy stories that have a hint of horror and a whole lot of brain-muddling scenes.

Bravo, Mr. Edwards, you’ve done it again!

I really enjoy Mark Edwards books, although this one was really difficult to get into. There’s no gripping story till about 3/4s of the book, but I carried on reading hoping to get to a good bit, and then it came at the end. He has some better books to read, probably miss this one out.

Jessica’s older sister, Isabel, appeared to have the perfect life. She was beautiful, ran a successful business and was married to a man she adored. Then, four years ago, she unexpectedly fell to her death from a balcony.

Jessica always believed it was an accident. However, her four-year-old daughter, Olivia, is now claiming her aunt Izzy – whom she never met – is angry because a bad man pushed her off the balcony. When she also begins to cite long forgotten details about Isabel’s past, Jessica starts to feel there is something more sinister behind her sister’s death.

Despite the police conclusion that Isabel’s death was indeed an accident, Jessica’s mother – who consistently maintained her son-in-law, Darpak, was responsible for her daughter’s death – is only too ready to accept her granddaughter’s story that Isabel’s spirit has returned to seek justice. Jessica, however, is more sceptical, but when Olivia’s strange behaviour starts to cause concern at school, she decides to investigate her daughter’s claims and hopefully uncover the truth about Isabel’s death.

Although ‘In Her Shadow’ gives the impression of being a supernatural novel, there is much more too it than that. Olivia’s claim of talking to her dead aunt is simply the catalyst for a thrilling investigation into the truth behind Isabel’s death, one which systematically exposes a trail of secrets and deception which eventually brings everybody into the spotlight of suspicion.

The more Jessica learns about Isabel’s life, the more she realises it was far from perfect and, as she delves more deeply into the events leading up to Isabel’s death, the list of suspects grows ever longer.

As with his previous novels, Mark Edwards has created the kind of situation that could easily happen to anybody, which makes the story all the more credible. With so many potential suspects to choose from, it is an intriguing and engrossing read that will keep you guessing right until the end.

Another great book by Mark Edwards, one of my favourite authors. I liked the mix of paranormal and murder mystery, and felt the two aspects worked together well. I was keen to find out what would happen throughout, and there were a few twists and turns that I didn’t expect. Sometimes the story felt a little far-fetched in places, but overall, it was an entertaining and enjoyable read.

This was by far, the best book I have read in ages! This was definitely one of his greatest stories. Spookey & cleverly written. Really enjoyable read. I didn't want it to end!

I would never have downloaded this book if it was by any other author because I’m not a fan of books with a supernatural theme. But I am a big fan of Mark Edwards and I’m glad I bought it because I was riveted, despite the theme. I love that Mark creates ordinary people with ordinary lives and injects a creepy and menacing element.

As always with Mark’s books, there are numerous twists and turns so just as you think you sussed out the villain it veers in another direction. I would say that there were a few words where I had to stop and look up the meaning (nascent, uxorious, priapic) and a couple of American terms which seemed unusual for a story set in south London (candy instead of sweets/chocolate and courtyard instead of front garden). Also, I’m not sure the makers (or users) of Lynx and Sure toiletries will be happy with the repeated references to it smelling like ‘cheap deodorant’.

On the whole though, another great read from this author – but please, Mark, just don’t go down the supernatural theme again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another winner from Mark Edwards!
Reviewed in the United States on 8 October 2018
Five years ago Jessica’s sister, Isabel, tragically fell from her second storey balcony. Now, Jessica’s daughter, Olivia, who was born after her aunt died, is exhibiting some worrying behaviour. The 4 year old is obsessed with death, particularly Isabel’s. Not only that, she insists that ‘Aunt Izzy’ told her she was ‘pushed’ by a bad man. Jessica tells herself there must be a rational explanation, but her daughter knows things about Izzy she couldn’t possibly know, and Jessica has believed in the existence of ghosts, even since she and Isabel were young, and their childhood home was invade by an evil spirit.

First rate psychological suspense! The perfect Halloween read, equipped with a creepy, unsettling storyline, that appears to be paranormal, but you know by the end there’s going to be a rational explanation. This is my fifth book by this author, and the fourth one I have rated 5 stars. His books have so many layers, peel back one, and you’ve barely scratched the surface. I figured someone had to be manipulating Olivia, feeding her information, but I was completely stumped by who, why, and how they were doing it. Instead of making more sense as the book progressed, things got even more confusing and disconcerting, and it wasn’t until the last page that I had all the answers. Well, except for one part that was left open to your own interpretation, depending on how you choose to read into it.

I really liked Jessica, an average wife and mother, just trying to do the best for her family. She’s got a lot on her plate – grieving the loss of her sister, as well as trying to figure out who, or what, is trying to harm her daughter, and whether or not there’s more to Isabel’s death than meets the eye. The bulk of the story takes place in the present (2018) narrated by Jessica, with flashback chapters (2012-2013) in Isabel’s POV.

An entertaining, nail-biting novel. I will be waiting with baited breath to see what Mark Edwards comes up with next.
