Linda Palund grew up in a small town library, hiding from bullies and the rest of the world. She was an ugly duckling and a misfit, but always knew she would blossom someday.     This racy pacey novel is a mature teenage read I would say. The story of Lucy's search for the killers of her beloved Carmen who she is obsessed by, is told through Lucy and is much her story as that of a murder hunt. The clues along the way lead to a violent conclusion as the dark secret of a closed society is revealed. Sexual desire is hinted at but never fully realised and although it's in the background, the undercurrent of male sexual violence make this a dark but thrilling read.

    This is an excellent read. The story of Carmen through Lucy's sincere eyes flows well and is exciting. It's refreshing to not have a female and male love affair in it and that best friends stay best friends. There are some harrowing moments but ultimately a great tale of close friendship.

    Keeps you guessing from the first page. The kind of read you don't want to put down, I read it in a matter of hours. Narration is very evenly paced. Lucy (whose best friend Carmen is brutally murdered) takes you by the hand, both as a companion and confidante as she gets to solve the mystery of Carmen's death. By the way, I guessed wrong!

    Linda Palund’s Little Black Dress falls only gently into the genre of teen LGBT fiction; it is mainly a mystery story, but even that shares pride of place with its setting seen through the eyes of its teenage protagonist, Lucy Linsky. That setting is the unique culture of the wealthy Los Angeles neighbourhoods of Beverly Hills and Bel Air.
    The strength of Ms Palund’s narrative is the natural way she gives us Lucy, mainly through her dialogue, which rings very true. To her credit, neither Ms Palund or Lucy overdoes the excesses of this shallow culture awash in money and status symbols.
    It is, I think, also creditable that not a lot of attention is paid to gayness, Lucy’s or anyone else’s. It is a taken matter of course; there are no shocked, regressive parents, shunning peers or ostracised victims. It’s a very positive thing to show a little bit of utopia, California-style.
    The evil that lurks in this utopia, that takes Lucy’s lover, is surprisingly horrific and is a jolting reminder of gritty reality that adds a feminist perspective to the story.
    The read was smooth, compelling and fast paced, difficult to stop once you are started; Ms Palund is a real storyteller with a fine ear for dialogue.

    Loved the story. Was hooked right off the bat and couldn't wait to see where it went. Linda Palund did an excellent job of allowing you to get to know each character and weaving them together. The mystery of who did it and how kept me interested. Easy read and I must say very enjoyable, hard to put down! Look forward to her next book!
