About the author

Wilkie Martin is a bestselling comedy and cozy mystery writer. He lives in the Cotswolds, UK with his partner in a town remarkably similar to the fictional Sorenchester of his unhuman series, although he has never come across a policeman there like Inspector Hobbes.
He loves cooking, especially curries which is why his characters tend to like things spicy and despite living as far away from the coast as is possible in the UK, he is a qualified scuba diving instructor.
Wilkie's latest book is a comedy crime fantasy story - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People.
There are now 5 books in his unhuman series of comedy cozy mystery fantasy novels, described by Cotswold Life magazine as 'odd, inventive and genuinely very funny indeed':
I - Inspector Hobbes and the Blood
II - Inspector Hobbes and the Curse
III - Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers
IV - Inspector Hobbes and the Bones
V - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People
They can be read standalone but are best read in order. They are available on kindle, paperback, large print paperback, hardback and audiobooks.
Find the first 3 unhuman books together in his ebook bundle - First Ever Unhuman Bundle.
Find the first 4 unhuman books in the Hobbes omnibus (paperback, hardback and audiobook).
He also has a fantasy thriller - Razor
an a little book of silly verse - Relative Disasters - that chronicles the various humorous but fatal mishaps that happen to family members.
Children's books are written as Wilkie J. Martin, and a cookbook as his character A.C. Caplet.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2015This is so my sort of book. Or books if you prefer being a trilogy. I'm often moaning about the lack of decent humour books nowadays, and this is the perfect panacea.
Set in the English Cotswolds, we start by meeting Andy Caplet, cub reporter on the local paper as he is assigned to follow Police Inspector Hobbes around. Andy is the ultimate klutz, constantly getting into trouble, or causing accidents. Hobbes is the ultimate detective. the only problem is, he's not quite human. We're not entirely sure what he is during the first two books, but I picture him as a shaved gorilla, with the manner of a late 19th century gentleman. Strong, fast, big and quite scary, he never less has a sense of what's right and wrong, and is the stalwart of the Sorenchester police force.
Sorenchester itself is a bit of a strange place. Over the course of the 3 books, we come across vampires, werewolves, werecats, trolls, mountain folk, elves and dwarfs, all living side by side. However most of what we know about these characters isn't quite correct, as Hobbes points out.
The recurring characters are wonderfully drawn, especially the house keeper, Mrs Goodfellow, and old woman, who teaches martial and marital arts, along with the ability to cook like no one else can.
There are wonderfully funny touches throughout the book. There were several times I found myself sitting giggling, not just at some of the descriptions, and action, but at some wonderfully funny one liners.
This is probably the best humorous fantasy book I've read in a long time. Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2018I thoroughly enjoyed reading this three book set, taking my time over it and not trying to read it all straight through, which I suspect would be a mistake. The weirdly superb and ultimately charming characters entertain us as they reveal more and more of their human sides alongside their less human quirks as the tales develop. Happily the very hapless and very human lead character, Andy, seems to become slightly less accident prone and more accomplished by the time he makes it to book three since I was starting to find his repeated ineptitude and bad luck a little tiresome. The pace seemed to dip a little in book two but by the final instalment it got harder and harder to put it down. I'd love to see these characters playing out some of the wonderfully comic, dramatic scenes in a movie and I'd love to see them back in episode four.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2020Love Inspector Hobbes !
Hapless Andy Caplet is on a voyage of discovery when he becomes involved with Inspector Hobbes and his mundane life as a put upon journalist is turned around. As the books unfold we learn more about Hobbes' background and his connection with other 'unhumans' that inhabit the seemingly ordinary town of Sorenchester. Great characters all , and some laugh out loud moments but with a solid story line that makes for a great read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2019I rarely write book reviews unless the book in question has kept me riveted from start to finish. I have just finished book one in the First Ever Unhuman Bundle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Light, easy to read, keeps your attention and has just the right amount of humour, maybe not the laugh-out-loud sort but the daft sort that has you cackling to yourself every now and then. I'm looking forward to reading the next three books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2020I wasn't sure at first but thought hey ho I will give it a go. Very quickly got into the story with both a hero and a wanna be in the same story and on the same side. Andy is accident prone 100% but has support from Hobbes all the way although I don't think Andy always wants it. Very colourful characters some you will love and some not. Bought the 3 book bundle and I am on the third book already! It really is difficult to put down. Love it!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2018Great fun with a surreal twist. Wilkie writes with a perceptive mix of adventure, irony, British humour and prose which kept bringing me back for more!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2017It takes a fair bit to impress me as I do like my humorous books. But I was very quickly impressed, by both the humour and the construction of the storylines in this bundle. The puns are real groaners and often at the end of red herring departures.... I mean, who would guess that the favourite meal of ghouls is their ghoul hash? I have to admit that I was so hooked by these books that I was glad to see a fourth in the series come out, and I'm looking forward to reading that. I'd thoroughly recommend them to cheer long winter nights.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2018Having struggled to find satisfying quirky storylines recently, I'm now content. The only trouble is that I keep hankering after a good meal cooked by Mrs.Goodfellow. It takes me back to my grans' kitchen delights sigh! I've just started the 'Gold Diggers' and there's just a glimmer that Andy might be developing into a better man than he was before he met Hobbes. Great characters and loving the puns.

5.0 out of 5 stars lustig

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! I've never met characters like Martin creates.
I'm a senior who has been reading 2-6 novels a week for my whole life, which adds up to a LOT of books. When it comes to main characters there are the heroes in life, the sexy hunks, those complex and filled with angst, and many others who are admirable. There are even the bad guys that one loves to hate. However, this is the first time I've fallen in love with a character who is so unlucky, accident-prone, inept, weak-willed, and somewhat weak in the morals department! By the end though, you realize that he's also funny, sweet and altogether endearing. The other main characters are mysterious, unexpected, and thoroughly capable. They help our bumbling main character survive adventures and, eventually, grow and thrive. I just looked at a review or two on Goodreads and the author is described as having a cult following. I can certainly believe it! Martin is very creative and, in these three books, very original. I don't know whether to hope that his other books will wow me as much or (thinking of my thin pocketbook) hoping he crashes and burns after these. lol If the rest of his work is anywhere near as good, I'm afraid I'll have to find everything and read them all. I might have just joined a cult.

A really enjoyable series, it has excellent characters and is humorous and fun. A mixture of old world fantasy and current day mystery.
