The Longest Kill: The Story of Maverick 41, One of the World's Greatest Snipers Kindle Edition
Through conflicts in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, this is the vivid memoir of British sniper Craig Harrison.
It takes a tough mindset to be a successful sniper, to be able to dig in for days on your own as you wait for your target, to stay calm on a battlefield when you yourself have become the target the enemy most want to take out. Craig Harrison has what it takes and in November 2009 in Afghanistan, under intense pressure, he saved the lives of his comrades with the longest confirmed sniper kill – 2,475 metres, the length of twenty-five football pitches.
In The Longest Kill, his unflinching autobiography, Craig catapults us into the heat of the action as he describes his active service in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, and gives heart-stopping accounts of his sniper ops as he fought for his life on the rooftops of Basra and the barren hills of Helmand province. Craig was blown up by an IED in Afghanistan and left battling severe PTSD. After his identity was revealed in the press he also had to cope with Al Qaeda threats against him and his family. For Craig, the price of heroism has been devastatingly high.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2015A few months ago I googled an old school friend to see if he was still alive. I say ‘alive’ because I knew he would end up being front line and Iraq & Afghanistan have since played out. What I found was not only was he was still alive, but that he was a true war hero and a world record holder. If I have ever met anyone in my life who could have been this person, it was Craig. Whether the story has been embellished as some claimed family members are stating, I do not know & they certainly do not know as they were clearly not there for him. I can tell you that the majority of the childhood stuff, certainly around the animal shelter & horses is true, as are the early army stories, the boxing, the legion, the violence, his best mate Tom and their antics etc. I know this as knew Craig and he had personally told me the army stories over a beer when I was back in Cheltenham 20 years ago (the last time I saw him). I had also witnessed his temper 1st hand at School when he single handed took on at least 15 kids who had barged into school to attack another of our mates. Bodies were flying as he literally picked them up & threw them around like rag dolls. As he says in his book, he hated bullies and from the age of 15 no-one messed with Craig.
It’s clear Craig managed to channel his energy and sheer determination achieving something quite special, this despite the archaic, hierarchical, nonsensical environment his career choice placed him in.
The book is a fantastic 5 star read, very difficult to put down, gritty to the core & totally believable. I agree with another reviewer that it’s better that Chris Kyle’s American Sniper; I found it more realistic. I was able to put myself in Craig’s boots & see through his eyes. Of course in reality I have no idea what it was like, but the story is told in such flowing intrinsic detail that you almost feel the pain both emotionally & physically…yes I cried.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Craig on his life’s achievements and thank him and his troop for laying their lives on the line for this country. I hope this book not only brings some satisfaction, healing & peace, but that it also helps you financially to live out a more comfortable life. Judging by the way the Army has treated you, you 100% deserve it. All the best.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 July 2024Craig's book was so well written. I simply couldn't put it down. Here is a man who has soldiered at grass roots level, not special forces or in some elevated position but as a soldier on the front line in most of the conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st Centuries. He tells it as it was from the perspective of both a trooper and Corporal of the Horse and it makes for fascinating reading. I cannot recommend this book more to any prospective reader of military history or memoirs.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2024I found the writers story to be absolutely fascinating. It was well written and did not glorify the job he did. It was so sad to hear how his own Regiment treated him at the end of his service, a story that is unfortunately all too common with the British Army. And the government wonders why Army recruitment is struggling! I hope that writing this book helped his recovery and that he and his family find peace.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 August 2024Started reading this when I found the book in the holiday let we stayed in and had to buy it to carry on reading. Quite a story, a good read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2024Really enjoyed the story, wishing Graig all the very best for himself and his family in the future. Such a strong character. Yet again a story of how you can quickly become just another number when you have no further purpose for the establishment. I hope you stay strong and live long brother

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2016Wow what a character. This book gives a real insight into the training and dedication of one man. It recounts his rise in the cavalry and just how dreadful many of the CO's are. This is not fiction but hard facts. It is about the real life of an extraordinary man. No complicated dialogue, just a true depiction of war and its casualties. A book everyone should read. As for the man himself, I raise my hat to him. He should, I think, instead of feeling guilty about his kills, think more on how many lives he saved. This book makes me ashamed of our politicians who use these men for their own ends and then discards them. Our soldiers deserve so much more. More care, more understanding, more rewards and much much more support. Maverick 41 you have honourably earned a place in both history and society and I am in awe of your sheer determination and stoicism. On a final note, there is no doubt in my mind that you should be the proud owner of the Military Cross and the idiot who refused it on your behalf had no such right to do so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crudo y muy bueno

5.0 out of 5 stars A PERSONAL MESSAGE FOR THE AUTHOR
1 Star review of the first 73 pages: So far Sgt Harrison seems to have been a reckless troublemaker at home, in school and would have probably been dishonorably discharged when still a private had he been in the US Army. If the book gets better I'll amend this review.
5 STAR AMENDED REVIEW: I have just finished this book. The above portion of my review was correct for Craig's early life as described in the first portion of his book. But he did indeed outgrow his early recklessness and became an excellent soldier and husband and the rest of the book is a great read. Unfortunately Craig has since suffered from PTSD to a fearful degree. That being the case I want to send him a personal message. Craig, I have been involved in multiple shooting situations involving violent felons (most took place at very close range when I was a police officer). When people for whatever reason decide to become violent criminals and/or radical terrorist murderers they are in effect volunteering to be targets of the police or the military and they know it, SO WHATEVER HAPPENS TO THEM IS THEIR OWN FAULT, NOT OURS!
Think about what happens if you fail to shoot when you should, or shoot and miss your target. Two felons I shot at and missed later murdered innocents. Those are the only two shooting situations I have ever regretted = the ones where I missed my targets. It's my opinion that it is the stupid and even suicidal ROE's that are responsible for most cases of PTSD and most should be eliminated.
