Review

Peterborough as a setting for edgy crime fiction? An unlikely proposition, but Dolan pulled it off -- Barry Forshaw ― Financial Times

A timely whodunit that takes a sophisticated slant on contemporary politics and the rise of the far right. Building to a breathlessly exciting finale, it’s
beautifully written and superbly plotted, confirming Dolan’s status as an exciting new voice in fictionSunday Mirror

Powerful...Once again, Dolan writes brilliantly about the liminal existence of migrant workers, and the political subplot is bang up-to-date -- Joan Smith ― Sunday Times

Eva Dolan is a newcomer to crime fiction, but
she pulls off the entertainment-information balancing act with the skill of an old pro -- Jake Kerridge, 4 stars ― Daily Telegraph

A very savvy and ultra-modern storyline that is
frightening in its believability -- Doug Johnstone ― Big Issue

This is the second in the series and I loved it from start to finish. The characters are very real and very likeable and the story was fast paced and kept me guessing to the dramatic end. Fantastic! Highly recommended.

Eva Dolan's second novel is set in the same dark world of hate crimes in Peterborough. It's even darker in tone than her first mystery and I enjoyed learning more about the main characters, DI Zigic and DS Ferreira. Dolan's books are great for fans of gritty crime and Nordic Noir. She is great at setting the scene in the complex, multicultural Peterborough. As with her first novel, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued.

Read this because the description said the story was based in Peterborough, where I grew up, and left many years ago.
Enjoyed the book, recognising all the street names I used to know. Not the best book I've ever read but enjoyable.

The narrative is gripping, the characters growing in detail and complexity. The stage is broad, with a wealth of tiny fragments to take on board and try to metabolise. Like the police themselves you are left bombarded and bewildered, trying to piece together a coherent story from so many options. Beyond the narrative, though, lie the truly frightening thoughts: that these beliefs are real and present in our society; that the disenfranchised and war-hardened spread their unhappiness and disillusion as they must (so much fear and oppression cannot evaporate quickly) and that there are amongst us not only politicians but police and security forces who are governed less by an acceptable morality than by a carefully crafted pragmatism.

A strong voice and a skilled craftswoman. One to follow but not to push into over-hasty conformity and uniformity. Let the next volume simmer until it reaches the same depth of flavour as this.

I do like this series and have, unfortunately for me, now read all of them. I hope more are forthcoming. The plot, as ever, is well thought out, the characters developing with each outing and the setting, Peterborough, an interesting choice, probably somewhat under-represented in crime literature. I like the clear setting of the book in an identifiable area, so much better than invented locations. I think Eva Dolan has drawn a good balance between reality and dramatic licence to make the events largely believable, I don’t like my crime too far away from reality, definitely not a serial killer fan. Great police procedural.

Well developed plot. Unravelling is rather unexpected. Plausible turn of events. Scary for all of us. Looking forward to the next novel by Eva Dolan

Peterborough wakes up to a 'Hit and Run' incident. Migrant workers are injured whilst waiting by a bus stop.

Dushan Zigic and Melinda Ferreira from the local Hate Crime squad add this to their existing cases. Is there a pattern?

Along with pressures from the media and local people. There is internal demands to get this solved as more racially motivated murders happen and the presence of a far right wing group adds to the tension on the streets.

This is a story set in the present day that twists and captures the tension in another well written book by Eva Dolan. This writer deserves a higher profile.

It would be interesting to know how this along with the previous book (Long Way Home) has been received in Peterborough and its local area?

4.0 out of 5 stars Hate crimes in England

I'm really enjoying this series because the topic is so relevant to the ongoing tensions that we are facing today... tensions with immigration, hate groups, Nationalists groups (hate groups by another name)
The same main characters, Zigic and Ferreira, as the first in the series :) They are strong and likeable characters
In this novel some of the politics behind the scenes is explored. Immigrants are being killed and the Hate crimes group links the killings - and we get to see the political process behind the "Nationalist" groups. If you like novels about hate crime and political groups you would enjoy this series

Loved Eva Dolan's first 2 books. I found this to read as a long book that stretched out. Dark subject.

I'm usually not a fan of fiction taking place in grim worlds where very bad people thrive. I like to be able to relate to people in the story. But Eva Dolan somehow describes this hard immigrant world and at the same time injects some humour and some suspense, as she again and again turns the story around. This is #2 of a series. The first was good, the second is great. I have high hopes for the third, which is waiting on my Kindle.
