The Drop (Harry Bosch Book 15) Kindle Edition
Is it the end of the line for Harry Bosch?
When evidence links a brutal murder in 1989 to a convicted rapist named Clayton Pell, the case should be watertight. Pell's DNA was found on the victim - but he was only eight years old at the time.
This is not the only mystery Harry Bosch has to solve. A man jumped - or was pushed - from a window. The victim's father is Councilman Irving, who's been intent on destroying Harry's career for years. Now Irving wants Harry to head up the investigation.
Harry uncovers traces of two of the city's deepest secrets: a killer operating for as many as three decades without being detected, and a conspiracy that goes back into the dark history of the police department . . .

"Connelly knows his way around a police investigation, and he knows his way around a courtroom. This knowledge makes his stories believable while his writing skills make them come alive....An exciting writer and one we love to read."--Jackie K. Cooper, Huffington Post
"Mr. Connelly, a former journalist, is a master of mixing realistic details of police work and courtroom procedure with the private feelings and personal lives of his protagonists, and of building suspense even as he evokes the somber poetry inherent in battling the dark side."--Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal
"Another of Connelly's brilliant Los Angeles crime novels."--Les Roberts, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"Each of his books is so much more than the sum of its parts....Connelly writes true-to-life fiction about true crime. What makes his crme stories ring true is that they're never really over."--Janet Maslin, New York Times

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2013Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThe Drop is the seventeenth Harry Bosch novel and once again shows that the series is going from strength to strength. After the excellent novel The Reversal featuring Harry Bosch and Micky Haller in a shared role Michael Connelly reverts back to a full Harry Bosch novel and the result is a very, very good book.
The Drop features two main plots with two cases getting equal time. The first is a cold case hit. Harry is handed a case with a new DNA match. The murder and a rape of a young women has gone unsolved for years but now the Open Unsolved Unit have made a DNA match and a suspect has been named. The DNA matches a convicted rapist however in a twist the suspect would have been just eight years old at the time of the crime. Harry is brought in to take over the case and to find out if the lab has made a mistake and if not to find out how an eight year old can leave DNA on the victim of a rape and murder.
In the second case Councillor Irvin, one of Harry's long term enemies and a long term thorn in the side of the LAPD, has asked for Harry personally to be the lead investigator into the death of his son. The Councillors son has checked into a high class hotel and is found dead on the pavement outside. All the signs point to suicide but Irvin uses Harry's belief that "everyone counts or no one counts" to demand that Harry find out exactly what happened to his son in that hotel room. The case is as political as it is challenging. Pressure is placed on Harry from Irvin, from his partner and from the chief of police. Harry however will not be swayed or pressured from getting the truth.
The relationship between Harry and his young daughter is also at the centre of this book. Harry is constantly thinking about her and the few scenes that the two are in together are wonderfully written and provide an extra layer to the Harry Bosch character
Once again Connelly has written a fantastic story and a great novel. The two cases are both very, very well written and the moving from case to case keeps the book moving at a fantastic pace and the phrase page turner may have been invented for this book! I could not put it down. Without giving away too much Connelly also produces one of the most shocking and fantastic endings in the whole series.
All in all this is a wonderful book. I would recommend it to any fans of either Michael Connelly or the crime genre in general.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2013As a (long time!) retired Detective I can relate to Harry Bosch and appreciate his investigative thought processes. Michael Connelly's 'crime beat' journalism background shines through and his knowledge of LAPD organisation/procedures lends weight to his plotting. I also feel that I know the thoroughfares and geography of Los Angeles, as well as it's diverse racial/social mix.
I have read every one of Connelly's books and have never been disappointed. He expects his readers to 'pay attention' and follow the various plot-lines. His books need to be read within a fairly short time span otherwise (if you are like me...!!) the subtleties can be 'lost' and a measure of back-page turning is required to get back on track! Harry Bosch is a marvellous character and I'm so glad he has been given a five year extension to his Police Service contract. Don't spoil things by trying to work out his age....!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2013This is how much I enjoy Michael Connelly's "Harry Bosch" series - I bought a hardcopy and gifted to myself as a Christmas present. I couldn't wait to hop into bed with Harry. I savored each page and even reread a few the next night to set the flavor of the evening's reading. Connelly is at his finest - once again - even though he does break some writing rules by telling rather than showing - so like who cares? It works. Harry is back from retirement working cold cases, not the active murder cases he so wants to solve. He is on a DROP - Deferred Retirement Optional Plan - three years until, Harry it's over (sniff, sniff What will I do without him?). He has his 15 yr old daughter living with him, and him such a loner and confirmed bachelor. I mean he's not the greatest ha ha guy in the world rather he's moody and intense. The cold case assigned him has an interesting element of DNA, which can't be, still it gets bumped for a maybe yes, maybe no, suicide of a councilman's son. The councilman is Bosch's old enemy Irvine Irving. Against direction Harry continues to work the cold case while solving the present one which brings him trouble from 'high jingo' - the higher ups. I found the cold case is more interesting as a murder story. A plus regarding how Connelly writes: A fan of (too) many crime novels, it appears more and more authors' descriptions of torture and blood letting are as gorey as they can imagine. For me, it's a turn off from what could be good writing and plot. Connelly creates that "OH!" shock without having to do that because he is truly a master writer. And this novel proves it, again

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseConnelly only gets better with each book!
He masterfully takes the readers through two simultaneous murder investigations, one of his old nemesis Irvin Irving's son and the other, a cold case of the past from the Open unsolved crimes unit. If you like Connelly, you will love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow…Stupendous! Just when I think it can’t get any better Michael Connelly raises the bar yet again
Wow…Stupendous! Just when I think it can’t get any better Michael Connelly raises the bar yet again! I absolutely love his character Bosch and live through him in ways via these stories. I had wanted to serve in the military and become a police officer rising up to become a detective but at age 14 I ended up in a 6 month coma due to severe abuse and neglect that doctors expected me to die from. I surprised them all when I awoke 6 months later but now live with a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and though I did great things with my life for others via advocacy, physically I was never going to be able to pass the physicals for serving my country nor my community in the ways I had longed to. BUT Mr. Connelly brings Bosch to life so vividly and with such remarkable talent weaving these tales I lose myself in that it is a positive and blessed way for me to pass my time and takes my mind even momentarily off the immense pain I must live with and I’m deeply grateful for that gift he shares with us all. This story was multi-layered and even towards the end Bosch unflinching content in his solid character never ceases to amaze as a conflict arises between him and a previous partner he had. Raises the intrigue level wondering where the story line is heading next. This book 15 is absolutely outstanding and here I now move onto book 16 as I’m reading through the whole series. I highly recommend this book series to my fellow crime, mystery, intrigue book fans and invite you to join me in completing all of Michael Connelly’s Bosch series. I’m happy to have this strong, resilient and determined character to lose my time with as my imagination goes on a journey through these intricate tales Connelly is so on top standing at creating. Bravo and cheers, Mr. Connelly! You are appreciated.
