Fly By Wire: A Jammer Davis Thriller Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 7,455 ratings

USA Today best-selling author

Winner of the Benjamin Franklin Award Silver Medal

The C-500 with its revolutionary fly-by-wire technology, had become the freight airframe of choice— until a routine delivery goes horribly wrong

Falling like a stone from six miles up, a brand-new C-500 crashes in central France, killing two pilots aboard. With over one hundred C-500s in service around the world, interest is keen to get to the bottom of the mystery. When French officials take over this highly public investigation, they call in the best there is: they call Frank “ Jammer” Davis.

A retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, Davis is part of the NTSB' s “ go team.” With a reputation for getting things done— and for steamrolling anyone who gets in his way— Davis starts to dig.

But just as Davis starts his investigation, news of the crash is overshadowed by a more spectacular disaster: suicide bombers attack oil refineries across the world, sending governments and financial markets into a tailspin.

A relentless Davis keeps working, but when he finally uncovers the cause of the crash, and its terrifying connection to the terrorist attacks, it is a conspiracy of unthinkable proportions.

A conspiracy he might not be able to stop.

Perfect for fans of Nelson DeMille, Tom Clancy, and Michael Crichton

While all of the novels in the Jammer Davis Series stand on their own and can be read in any order, the publication sequence is:

Review

"The threads of a sinister conspiracy corrupting the United States government entangle this tense mystery [ Passenger 19 ], highly recommended especially for connoisseurs of the genre." Midwest Book Review

"I love thriller authors who live what they write about. Ward Larsen is an airline captain who also flew combat missions and worked on aircraft accident investigations. In Fly By Wire , he brings his expert background to a gripping, entertaining, informative thriller that feels authentic on every page." - David Morrell, New York Times best-selling author

"Larsen is fast becoming a thriller writer to watch. He clearly knows his subject matter and has a knack for writing about technology without it getting in the way of the story or the characters. Fans of the aviation thrillers of John Nance and of Michael Crichton's Airframe (1996) will find much to enjoy here." - Booklist

"The descriptions of the crash scene and of Jammer's investigative work are masterfully done, and there is a superb fight scene or two with Jammer and cohorts." - Sacramento Book Review/San Francisco Book Review

Praise for the Jammer Davis Series "Larsen, a former Air Force fighter pilot who's flown many combat missions, is a skilled writer who knows his technology, but does not let it overwhelm his story. His latest [ Fly By Night ] is a solid action novel that will appeal to aviation thriller junkies who enjoy John J. Nance and Dana Haynes." - Library Journal

" Fly By Wire combines the complexities of aircraft technology, international conspiracies, terrorism, oil shortages, falling financial markets, and a father's love for his teenage daughter with an ease that is breathtaking." - Mystery Scene Magazine

"This book [ Passenger 19 ] is highly recommended for suspense/thriller readers who want authentic characters and a plot so well written that they immediately want to read it all over again." Suspense Magazine

I loved this book. The author is new to me, but I will definitely download the rest of the titles in this series. I loved the characters, the story moved at a good pace & was engaging from start to finish. There were a couple of places when I thought there was going to be some romance between two characters, but thankfully the author decided to not go into any details, as I don't think romance was going to add anything to the overall story. I enjoyed the descriptions of the characters & their environments, plus the author's imagination of how a Flying Wing aircraft would look & operate.

Fly By Wire is the third thriller by Ward Larsen that I've read, and in terms of quality falls somewhere between the excellent The Perfect Assassin and his decent but unspectacular debut Stealing Trinity.

Focused primarily, but not exclusively, around the world of air accident investigations, Fly By Wire is a contemporary thriller that takes in subjects ranging from Islamisist terrorist threats to oil and energy shortages and the potential hazards from ever increasing technological complexity.

Like the underrated Larsen's two previous novels its a tightly plotted, stripped down affair that avoids huge chunks of uneccessary factual information or massive flights of fancy. The plot unfolds logically, doesn't slide into massive implausibility and includes a few reasonably clever twists and turns. Larsen's writing style is unfussy but solid, he knows his facts when it comes to the aviation and military technicalities and, as he displayed in The Perfect Assassin, he's able to conjure up a sense of place whilst avoiding cliche.

If the book does have flaws its in the characterisation. The male and female heroes, Jammer Davis & Anna Sorensen, remain rather one dimensional creations straight out of central casting. Making Davis a widower with a teenage daughter doesn't add much depth to him and Sorensen remains a cypher. Their personal relationship meanwhile, follows a tiresomely predictable path. With the rest comprising deliberately mysterious individuals or supporting players there no-one else to grab and hold the reader's attention. Even the primary bad guy lacks any real charisma, although this is due to the plotting rather than poor characterisation.

Overall however, this is another solid thriller from Larsen. Its not going to set the world alight or rewrite the rule book for the genre, but its a reasonably intelligent, entertaining affair that is a step above many similar books in term of quality and again suggests that Ward Larsen should be better known than he is.

I love books that don't make the hero some kind of superman and this was one of them. Really enjoyable read with a good plot which was obscure enough not to be obvious until it was explained by the author. I likes the characters, the storyline and loved the feel good twist at the very end.

An interesting and not improbable story which kept my interest.
A complicated situation made easy to follow and accept as possible in today's strange world of power, control, finance and overall, mental stupidy.

I got the first book in the series as a freebie, and I must say I have been impressed. Jammer Davis is an air accident investigator for the NTSB, National Transportation Safety Board I think it stands for, A former fighter pilot, he isn't good at the bureaucracy side of the job. He IS good at figuring out the mystery of why an aeroplane falls out of the sky.

It's an interesting, clever story - I liked it a lot. I shall put volume 2 on my shopping list

Wow! What a thrilling and entertaining ride. Thoroughly enjoyed the twisting plot and rich characters. The technical details were spot on... enough to be convincing but not too much to overwhelm. Loved it!

First book and I am loving the Jammer character. I had already found him very entertaining after reading The David Slaton series. Most of his background was not brought up in that book. He is a smart, witty and funny. The story took many unforeseen turns. From who the terrorist was, the reason behind the terrorist strikes, and how the final strike was going to be carried out. Very, very well written story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good story, well written, sustained suspence
Reviewed in Italy on 26 August 2016
This is the first book I've read by Ward Larsen. I must say I'm very satisfied. The book is well written, never annoying, and the plot is not trivial.
In the end the story is escalting too much for my taste, with the president of the US and that kind of stuff.
Of course the good guy is strong, intelligent and entertaining, the other characters are rather flat, but for this kind of entertainment book this is
good enough. I recommend the book for a good and easy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fly By Wire Handles Like a Spit
Reviewed in the United States on 21 January 2013
I am the author of War Worlds, and I am not a friend of Ward Larsen's, nor did he solicit this review from me. In fact, I've never met or spoken to the writer of Fly By Wire. I purchased this novel on Amazon, and what follows is my honest appraisal of the work.

Ward Larsen's clever novel, Fly by Wire: A Jammer Davis Thriller, twists and turns like a Spitfire in a dogfight. While using conventional motifs like hero-browbeats-venal-bureaucrats and hero-falls-in-love-with-spygirl, the story, nonetheless, braces the reader with several refreshing and original storylines. The hero, Jammer, is an overly large and beefy ex-fighter pilot turned aircraft accident investigator. His typical response to challenges reminds one of Marvel Comics' The Thing - it's clobberin' time - and that can get a little wearying. But Jammer figgers stuff out too, and, in the end, the reader likes Jammer and pulls for him to succeed. Larsen makes a valiant attempt to provide depth to Jammer's character, but we're always waiting for the human touches to fade away until...it's clobberin' time!

The other characters, particularly the villain of the story, are well done. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and declare that the villain in this story is the best villain I've encountered since Hannibal Lecter. This character alone elevates the story to four stars, in my opinion. The only reason I'm holding back that last star is because the arc of this kind of thriller - puzzle to complication to insight to last minute heroics - is so well travelled.

If you're ready to strap on a jet fighter and go for a wild ride, I recommend Fly By Wire. You won't stop very often for refueling, but the G forces will pop your neck a few times. If you want to play it safe, don't get onboard. There's trouble in the friendly skies.
